Be thankful

For the people in Whitman County: be thankful your post offices did not close completely as the one in Washtucna did.

Spending threat

I read the letter to the Editor by Dean G. Ickes last week with alarm. Mr. Ickes must hate our kids and grandkids! Yes, our government can overspend! It is overspending —and it will greatly harm our kids and grandkids!

It would be fantastic if our government only spent 80 percent of income as Mr. Ickes suggested that well run businesses and/or responsible individuals are doing.

However, we all know that is not the case.

Our Government is spending almost 200% of its revenue.

That is—they ( I mean “we”) are borrowing almost 50 cents of every dollar the US Government spends.

As we all know, borrowed money must be repaid sometime.

We also all know it is now impossible to repay this deficit in our lifetimes.

It will have to be paid by our kids and grandkids and great grandkids.

When we saddle our future generations with our “credit card” government spending—it is a hateful thing.

To advocate for that irresponsible behavior is a hateful thing.

It shows we are too selfish and morally bankrupt to pay our own way We would rather mortgage the yet unborn just so we can be comfortable now...and self serving politicians can buy votes now.

Mr. Ickes should have honestly checked out the countries he was citing. Denmark ran a budget surplus until the last three or four years and is now trying to cut spending so they will not go further into debt and become the next Greece. I applaud them. Greece has been borrowing and spending for so long that no one will lend to them any more. Their chickens are now coming home to roost. If we do the same we will end up the same.

If we love our kids we will stop spending their futures. The only way to do that is vote out any politician that refuses to cut spending now!

Colfax
