Poachers shoot elk, abandon carcasses

Two bull elk were shot and left in the hills between Colfax and Palouse Saturday night.

State Fish and Wildlife Officer Doug King said the elk were shot on Mike Johnson Road, just off the Palouse Highway about 2 a.m. He believes the poachers got scared someone was going to catch them and took off before they could take the antlers or get any meat off the animals.

King said that a landowner called the sheriff to report the incident.

King also said the elk were 100 to 150 yards off the road and that the poachers used a spotlight, which was left at the scene, to locate the animals.
