China report

at St. John

St. John Christian Church invites the community to join them Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. to meet Global Ministry Missionaries Tom and Lynnea Morris. They will share there experiences serving in Nanjing, China. Tom was assigned to the Drumtower Hospital, and Lynnea taught through the Amity Foundation during their three years in China.

Rosalia library change

Rosalia Library Storytime has changed to Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. to better meet the needs of parents. Librarian Karen Wallace invites parents and grandparents to bring children ages 0 to 6 to join her for fun, stories, songs, and other activities.

Teen Librarian Chelsea Leachman is coming to the Rosalia Library on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. as a part of Teen Read Week. Kids in grades 6-12 are invited to a Teen Crafternoon making Bottle Cap Jewelry.

Local children’s author Marcy Campbell and her favorite mouse Rosie are special guests at a Halloween Storytime on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. Marcy will read Rosie’s Scary Tale. Arts and crafts will make for a special morning children up to age six.

Garfield library dates

Wednesday, Oct. 17, will be a craft day for kids and teens at the Garfield Library.

Mary Alderman will offer disaster preparation and Halloween safety tips Oct. 22 from 4:30 to 6:30.

On Halloween, all ages are invited to the Garfield Library Spooktacular party. Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to come by for a treat.

Electronic workshop

A library workshop for electronic media users will be Monday, Oct. 15, between 4:30 and 6:30 in the Norma McGregor Community room. Participants can bring their own devices for assistance or learn to operate the two new Nook Simple Touches or two preloaded mp3 players that can now be requested and checked out from the Colfax library.

The Nooks are available through a grant program called eREADS in eWA. Whitman County along with five other library districts will offer Nook Simple Touches with preloaded titles in popular genres like Mystery, Romance, Bestsellers and more. The Nooks will then rotate through these libraries every two months, eventually giving patrons access to all of the titles.

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Athenaeum

Members of Athenaeum Club met Friday at the Country Bible Church for their annual homecoming tea. The yearbook committee hosted the meeting.

Phyllis Kincaid introduced Barbara Johnson who presented a program on elder care here and in other countries.

The table was decorated with a garland of fall flowers. Two kinds of cupcakes and a choice of grapes, cheese, nuts and mints were served. Smaller tables were graced with white clothes, yellow toppers and small pumpkins.

Next meeting will be Oct. 19 at the home of Linda Marler with Maxine Lange presenting a program on the life of Helen Hayes, one of the women in the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

P.E.O.

Chapter AF met at the home of Arlene Hatley, and 11 members responded to roll call by stating their favorite food.

The Dessert-A-Month ticket sales results during Hullabaloo were discussed. The ticket sale will continue until Dec. 10 when two winners will be drawn. This is the annual fund raising event for the scholarship fund.

Several members reported on their trips to Whitman Health & Rehab Center to visit with a 50 year member of P.E.O. who is receiving therapy.

Next scheduled meeting will be Oct. 22 at the home of Pat Hartman with Liane Smith co-hostess. Ann Marra is in charge of the program.

Thrifty Grandmothers

Eighteen members were present Monday with two guests for the October meeting. They voted to give $1,000 for two FFA members to attend the national convention in Indianapolis, $1,000 to the Friends of Hospice and $1,000 to the Friends of the Library at Endicott.

The shop received an abundance of donations after Hullabaloo weekend.

Next meeting will be Nov. 12 at the library.

Hospital Auxiliary

Whitman Hospital Auxiliary met Oct. 1 at the Whitman Hospital ad-annex. It presented the hospital $9,000 from the auxiliary for a vital sign monitor and to help with new paper towel dispensers to be purchased in the near future.

Members were presented with certificates for years served on behalf of the Whitman Medical Center and served refreshments.

Next meeting will be Nov. 5 at 1:30 at the Whitman Hospital ad-annex. Anyone interested is very welcome to attend.

Daniels grandson born

Nash Lair Daniel was born Sept. 10, 2012, at Deaconess Women’s and Children Center in Spokane at seven pounds, 13 ounces, to Jeremy and Shayla Daniel of Greenacres. Maternal grandmother is Tammy Gaytan, Lubbock, Texas. Paternal grandparents are Roger and Loretta Daniel, LaCrosse. The baby joins sister Gabriella, 2.

AT WHITMAN HOSPITAL

Clemens, Rand Thomas Hamilton, was born Oct. 4, 2012, at eight pounds, seven and a half ounces, to Erin and Chris Clemens of Asotin. Maternal grandparents are Ron and Judy Tweedy of Coeur d’Alene. Paternal grandparents are Tom Clemens of Clarkston and Cheryle Clemens of Liberty Lake. The baby joins a sister, Olivia.

Cloninger, Mya Rose, was born Oct. 6, 2012, at seven pouns, five and a one half ounces, to Brandi Roper and Jacob Cloninger of Colfax. Maternal grandparents are Bruce and Janna Roper of Garfield. Paternal grandparents are Pat Cloninger of Colfax and Alice Rager of Garfield. The baby joins Austin, 11, Madi, 8, and McKinna, 2.

AT PULLMAN REGIONAL HOSPITAL

Bair, Peyton Eli, born Sept. 27 at seven pounds, 10 ounces, first child to Jacob and Rachel Bair of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Glen and Ruth Bair of Ephrata. Maternal grandparents are Bruce and Aleta Heiner of Colfax.

Harris, Lia Marilyn, born Sept. 27, first child to James and Keiko Harris of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Jim and Marilyn Harris of Lewiston, Idaho. Maternal grandparents are Tomohide and Yasumi Inoue of Japan. Maponga, Nyasha Neveah, was born Sept. 27 at eight pounds, one ounces, first child to Whitney Hodge of Pullman and Stansly Maponga of Fort Worth, Texas. Paternal grandparent is Barbara Green of Carrolton, Texas. Maternal grandparents are Diane and Milford Hodge, Pullman.

Dominguez-Figueroa, Isabella Anahi, was born Sept. 30 at six pounds, 15 ounces, to Claudia and Filemon Dominguez of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Macedonio and Esperanza Dominguez of Yakima. Maternal grandparents are Jose Luis and Elvira Figueroa of Selah. The baby joins brother Emmanuel, 2.

ART -UI Pritchard Art Gallery will feature Michael Hosaluk, Acts of Chairs, Oct. 12 - Dec. 2. Hosaluk is recognized internationally as one of the world’s most creative wood turners. Acts of Chairs features Hosaluk’s sculpted chair forms in an interactive installation. Pritchard Art Gallery is located on Main Street, downtown Moscow. Whitman County Libraries will celebrate Teen Read Week October 14-20 with special programs aimed at encouraging area teens to read. Teen librarian Chelsea Leachman will conduct a series of reading inspired “crafternoons” where teens can make bottle cap jewelry inspired by their favorite books, movies or music.

Sessions began at Colfax Wednesday and will continue Monday, Oct. 15- at the Garfield Library, 4 p.m .; Wednesday, Oct. 17- Rosalia Library at 4 p.m .; Saturday, Oct. 20- Albion Library at 3 p.m.

“Teens have more activities to fill their free time than ever with web videos, social networking sites, video games, after school activities, athletics and increasingly high expectations in the classroom.”

“It’s important that we show them that reading is something that’s fun and relaxing that they can do for free, ” Leachman noted.

Learn how to download e-books and audio books from OverDrive Monday, Oct. 15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Participants are encouraged to bring in their electronic devices with cables and personal laptops.

Kids in grades 5 and 6 are invited to Art and Music with Lego Robotics by the Palouse Discovery Science Center Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 3:45-5 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Class size is limited. To register, call the library.

Ancient creatures come to life at the Colfax Library on Thursday, October 18 at 3:30 p.m. Join acclaimed children’s nonfiction writer Kelly Milner Halls for an afternoon of delightful dinosaur discovery. This program is open to all students and home school kids grades 1-4. Due to our special guest, the library encourages all family members to attend.

Families throughout Whitman County are invited to a Pumpkin Party Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Festivities include games, crafts and a free miniature pumpkin sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library.
