Serving Whitman County since 1877

Important job

In time of need, we surely realize just how important our volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel are here in rural Whitman County. The response to successfully fighting our Elberton fire on Saturday was a cooperative effort of the Colfax, Garfield, Palouse, Albion, and Steptoe crews. They kept the fire from moving into the timber and saved the nearby homes and county park ground. In our rural towns, the numbers of volunteers for our fire and medical personnel are dwindling. We encourage people to consider training for these important jobs.

Again

If the Hawkins project was a dead horse, I’d still probably be trying to beat it to death, but since it still seems to be alive I will put my two cents’ worth in again.

It is amazing to me to read through an article based on information that was gathered in 2007. Hey people, water? bridge? This article was a total waste of time, and in my opinion, total propaganda by Mr. ONeill.

I am not saying that Whitman County could not use certain retail establishments. But I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the county has absolutely no business being the underwriters for any development. If it’s worth doing, the developers should do it all. If they can’t do it all, then it’s not worth doing.

End of story.

A perfect time

How recently have you good citizens contemplated the words and meaning of our U.S. Constitution? If it has been a while, now is the perfect time to refresh your memory and give thanks to that group of patriots who carefully chose the words to design the Representative Republic form of government to make possible each individual’s attainment of the American Dream. We know that American Dream as living under a government whose chosen documents provide the protection of our God-given unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, as stated in the Declaration of Independence.

The Constitution became the Law of the Land on Sept. 17, 1787. In 1952, Congress designated the 17th of September as “Citizenship Day.” In 1956, Congress set aside the 17th to the 23rd of September as “Constitution Week,” and requested the President establish it each year by Proclamation.

So, in this particular year of our General Election and an obvious year of global unrest, isn’t NOW the time for all good and appreciative men and women to come to the aid of their country?

Oakesdale
