Colfax woman sentenced

Karen D. Thomas, 43, Colfax, was sentenced to 10 days in jail Sept. 7 after she pleaded guilty to attempted forgery, third degree theft and contempt of court. She was sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but 10 days suspended on each of the three charges. They were served concurrently.

The charges related to a small claims court verdict against Thomas last fall. The plaintiff in the small claims action reported to the sheriff’s office that she had not actually received proceeds from one of two canceled checks which had been filed in district court to document payment of the judgment against Thomas.

The report filed with the charges said Thomas had actually endorsed one check with the victim’s name and then submitted it to district court to document payment of the $687 amount. The report said the sheriff’s office obtained a picture of Thomas submitting the check at a Spokane branch of Chase Bank.

The report said Thomas admitted she submitted the check as false evidence of payment because she felt the verdict on the small claims judgment was excessive. She was also ordered to pay $700 in fines and fees.
