Ban animal acts

A few short days from now the Palouse Empire Fairground will once again be home to an amazing array of abused exotic animals. The traveling circus that visits us here in Whitman County each summer is the Jordan World Circus.

Dozens of U.S. cities and counties, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Austria, India, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal and Slovakia have passed measures to ban wild animals in circus acts. Other nations, including Britain, Norway and Brazil, are on the verge of doing the same.

The Palouse is home to not one, but two major centers for higher education. As such, isn’t it our moral obligation to champion this cause and to be the trendsetter for the rest of our state? I say yes.

Please join me by contacting our three Whitman County Commissioners and asking them to ban all future traveling animal acts in Whitman County.

Email for Commissioner Largent: michaell@co.whitman.wa.us, Email for Commissioners Partch and ONeill: maribedib@co.whitman.wa.us

And finally, please, take your kid to the movies or on a picnic, but, don’t take them to the circus next Tuesday, June 12.

Shelley Calissendorff,

Pullman
