SENTENCING ENDS CHECK CASE

A five-year-old check fraud case was concluded May 25 when Rebecca Sue Meyers, 49, Reedsport, Ore., was sentenced to two months in jail after she admitted a charge of second degree theft. A second charge of forgery was dropped as part of a plea bargain agreement.

Meyers was credited with 35 days already spent in jail since she was arrested on a warrant in Oregon. Arrest warrants were issued after she failed to make court appearances here after the two charges were filed against her in May of 2008.

The charge involved $300 in checks which were made out on an account at the Washington State Employees Credit Union. The holder of the account told police he did not issue the checks. Investigators later learned the checks were made out to the suspect’s boyfriend. When notified, police in Oregon said they suspected Meyers who they believed had a record of similar offenses. She later told officers she made out the checks after finding a checkbook.

Meyers Friday was also ordered to pay $2,360 in fines and fees.
