'Wayfinding' County Parks hires designer for Scenic Byway signs

Whitman County Parks has hired R Designs of Moscow to create layouts for 13 interpretive Wayfinding signs for the Palouse Scenic Byway.

The kiosk-like signs will be posted at 13 locations along the route, highlighting local sights to see and half-day trips from each place.

R Designs is on contract through May of next year although County Parks Director Tim Myers hopes to wrap the project before then.

“We’d like to get them in place by late summer or fall,” he said.

Dimensions of the signs are yet to be determined, depending on cost.

First round mockups were shown to the Scenic Byway committee May 23.

“I’m really excited,” said Vicki Leeper, Tourism Director for Pullman Chamber of Commerce. “The mockups look excellent.”

The signs will include a pocket on the back of clear lucite to hold current, updated materials, along with brochure slots on the side.

Leeper said a photographer will now be hired to take pictures to appear on the kiosks.

A grant from Washington State Scenic Byways will pay for the signs while communities will cover the cost of installation.

Locations for the Wayfinding signs in the 13 communities of the Byway will be as follows:

Colfax (Goode Park), Dusty (at rest stop), LaCrosse (undecided), Pullman (Chamber of Commerce), Almota (Boyer), Colton-Uniontown (Post Office), Uniontown-Colton (undecided), Steptoe (white church), Rosalia (Texaco Visitors Center), Tekoa (rest area by Empire Theater), Oakesdale (by gas station), Garfield (undecided), Palouse (by public restroom).

The signs in Colton and Uniontown will identify their connection to each other while highlighting the individual towns.

Each of the 13 cities of the Scenic Byway are now gathering information to submit to the committee to include on the signs.

“We’re encouraging all of the communities on the byway to attend the meetings so we can move forward with the project,” said Myers.

Next Scenic Byway meeting will be June 27 at 6 p.m. at the Colfax Public Service building.
