Colfax girls sweep WP in tune_up tilt

Colfax girls Tuesday went on the road to log two big wins over Waitsburg/Prescott in tune-up games.

The Bulldogs made the trip south after Coach Terry Eng booked the games to stay in tune during a lull in the playoff schedule. Colfax needed the action because they would have been idle for two weeks since their last league action.

Waitsburg/Prescott was available to play Tuesday because they were idle as the number-two finisher in the SE behind DeSales. The two top SE teams earned a bye while the next four finishers waged an SE playoff round Tuesday.

First playoff round for the Bulldogs, number-one team in the league, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Merkel complex north of Albi Stadium in Spokane.

Tuesday at Prescott, the Bulldogs took the first game 8-4 with 14 hits and the second game 16-5 with 18 hits.

Amy Hickman struck out five, walked three and allowed five hits in the first game. The game was close until the Bulldogs scored four runs in the sixth inning.

Shortstop Lauren Moore rapped three singles to top the hits. Rachel Robinson, Hickman and Erica Eng each tagged a single and double. Kaysha Lyman, Abby Muir and Scoops Hahn also had hits.

In the 16-5 closer, Colfax again took control late in the game with eight runs in the seventh. Moore led the rally with a three-run triple. Colfax scored five of the eight final runs with two out.

Hickman pitched two innings and Eng finished it out. They allowed zero walks, seven hits and struck out five hosts.

Colfax defense booked one long range double play when Moore scooped up a rap at shortstop, checked off a WP runner at second and threw to Sam Pearson at first for the first out. WP’s runner at second made a break for third base, and Pearson shot it across the diamond to Hahn who made the out at third.

Another feature of the pickup game was the battle of the pitching Engs in the second game. Erica Eng was pitching against WP’s Sydney Eng who is the granddaughter of Yick Eng, a one-time employee of Erica’s grandfather, the late Pete Eng of Colfax. Sydney’s dad, Marvin Eng, is a coach for WP.

Hits for Colfax in the closer were Moore, double and triple; Hahn, Pearson, and Lyman, each two singles; Robinson, two singles and a triple; and a Hickman, double; Kori Goodwin, two singles and a double; Muir, Rachel Hardie and Amara Huber, each a single.
