Penny drive nets $1,473 for projects

Whitman County Library supporters donated $1,473 during its annual Penny Drive this year. Each library branch designated a project for the money. They will range from special children’s reading incentives to summer reading programs for all ages.

For the seventh year in a row, Vicki Hatley’s Daycare children, family and friends won the Penny Drive local competition with $216.80 collected for kid’s programs at the Colfax library and storytime outreach to licensed facilities. As a reward for their efforts, the children enjoyed a popsicle party with the Reading Bear and book prizes.

Many classrooms throughout Whitman County also participated in local competitions for a chance to win goodies and prizes. Mrs. Vorderbrueggan’s fifth grade class in Colfax won the Jennings Elementary School competition.
