Colfax wrestlers plan Orofino trip

Colfax Bulldog wrestlers will depart Friday for the two-day tournament at Orofino. Coach Dennis Gransbery said the tournament will feature a qualifying round Friday to determine pod assignments for the following day.

Wrestlers will compete inside of their assigned pod in the Saturday rounds under a format intended to group wrestlers according to skill levels.

Colfax and other teams plan to “sleep on the mats” Friday night before the finals.

Coach Gransbery hopes to have heavyweight Daython Maltone back in action at Orofino. Maltone, who injured an arm in practice last week, missed the big Warden meet last Saturday where he would have been booked against some of the state’s top heavies from A and B division teams. Maltone now has a 12-1 record with two subsequent wins over the grappler who defeated him early in the season.

Justin King topped the Colfax entry at Warden Saturday with a second place finish in the 170 class. King booked two pins with a semi final win over Sean Waters of Lake Roosevelt. He was stopped by Warden’s Hector Carmacho who booked a pin in the second round for the Warden title. Carmacho placed second at the state mat classic last year.

Ray Compton booked a 2-2 mark in the 182 class. He was 1-1 on pins in the prelim rounds and then advanced to the 3-4 match on a 8-5 win over Nicholas Guerra of Warden. He was pinned by Lake Roosevelt’s finalist for fourth place.

Dalton McNeilly posted a 0-3 in the 160 class, and Brandon Arneson posted a 1-3 record with a pin over Erick Gomez in the second round for his lone win.

Aaron Arneson finished 0-2 in the 220 class with loses on second-round pins to Jose Valvinos of Connell and Steve Brooke of Adna.

After a return from Orofino, Colfax will host back-to-back meets with Potlatch slated for next Tuesday and a league meet next Thursday.
