Palouse Round Table Club marks 100 years

It’s 100 years for the Round Table Club of Palouse.

Holding their annual Christmas craft sale and luncheon in Palouse Saturday, the group of 18 women in the Palouse area celebrated the club’s 100th year in 2011.

The philanthropic group puts on their annual Christmas sale to earn money for scholarships and other causes.

The club began on Nov. 9, 1911, dedicated as the Cultus Club.

In 1913, the name was changed followed by their involvement in Palouse’s Hayton-Green Park. The group planted trees as part of their early charity work.

“If there’s a need, we try to support it,” said Barbara Scoville, club president. She has been a member since 1974. Before her, Scoville’s mother-in-law was a member.

Women are invited to become part of the group, which will add two members next year. Four of the members are “life members,” older women who are no longer able to be as active as they once were.

The group meets once a month, down from twice a month in recent years. They make crafts throughout the year to sell at their Christmas fair.

Last year, through craft sale proceeds and other funds, the group gave nine $500 scholarships to local graduates.

The group does not meet during the summer.

“I like the friendships formed,” said Scoville. “And I like the fact that we can raise money and give it back to young people.”

The craft sale will be at Palouse Federated Church Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
