Palouse cuts switch on 23 main street lights

In an effort to cut costs, the city of Palouse began an experiment last week.

A total of 23 of Main Street’s 42 lights were turned off.

Essentially, Dwayne Griffin, maintenance superintendent, had every other light shut off. The cost savings are estimated at roughly $230 a month, or $10 per light.

“We’re hopeful people are understanding of the situation we’re in,” said Palouse deputy clerk Ann Thompson.

The city council plans to run the experiment into the new year, and then assess it.

The council will vote on their 2012 budget Dec. 13.
