Palouse will host 6th Bluegrass fest

The sixth annual Palouse Bluegrass Festival will be Saturday at Palouse City Park. Musicians such as Wannigan, Scott Thompson and Tiana Gregg will play from 12-9 p.m.

Also featured will be antiques, crafts and food, including a pig roast barbecue and beer garden to benefit the new community center project. Festival admission is $5.

The performance schedule includes 12 p.m. Diamond Joe and the Country Mile, 12:20 p.m. Drake Akin, 12:30 p.m. Dave Fulfs and Friends, 1 p.m. River Giant, 2 p.m. Tom Drake Band, 3 p.m. Brad Keeler Trio, 4 p.m. Forgotten Freight, 5 p.m. Shiloh Sharrad, 6 p.m. Wannigan, 7 p.m. Scott Thompson, 8 p.m. Tiana Gregg.

Dog obedience class

A free class with professional dog trainer Sara White will be at Eells Park Friday, July 29, at 10 a.m. Sponsored by White and Whitman County library, the class is for dog owners 10 and up. Bring pets on a six-foot walking leash and provide doggie treats for positive reinforcement. Only one dog per owner.

Dayton Depot sets benefit auction night

Dayton Historic Depot’s benefit auction will be next Saturday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the courtyard of the depot. Admission is free with complementary hors d’ oeuvres sponsored by McDonald Zaring Insurance and catered by Country Cupboard.

This is the Dayton Historic Depot Society’s largest fundraiser and is extremely important to the continued day-to-day operations of the depot museum, according to Mary Byrd, depot manager.

All 14 branches of Whitman County Library will be closed for Annual Maintenance Week on Aug. 1-7. Many services will still be available through the library’s website.

During the closure, all website services will be available including Ask Us 24/7 Librarian service, newspapers, magazines, Rural Heritage and the library’s catalog which now carries thousands of downloadable audiobook titles. Books and other library materials will not be due during this closure and all bookdrops will be available as usual.

Whitman County teens and adults Summer Reading continues through August 31. Briefly review three books at your local library in exchange for a beverage certificate. Summer reading completion forms can be accessed from the library’s website or by stopping in at any branch of Whitman County Library.

Additional programs and events coming to the Colfax Library include Pajama Storytime, Forever Free Lincoln Exhibit and an INBC Blood Drive. With the end of summer just around the corner, Summer Reading participants, between ages 0 - 12, can exchange their completed Summer Reading Log for a prize bag filled with exciting goodies at the Colfax Library. Visit the library between now and mid August to receive a prize bag before they are gone.

Visit Whitman County Library’s new book section for the latest releases from America’s top selling authors and discover new authors as well. Popular author Lisa See’s “Dreams of Joy” continues the story of sisters Pearl and May where “Shanghai Girls” left off: when Pearl’s daughter, Joy, discovers that May is her true mother.
