Colfax crew stops swim pool leak

A leak which could have been dumping as much as 5,000 gallons per day from of the Colfax swimming pool system has been discovered and repaired, Public Works Director Andy Rogers reported to the city council Monday night. The leak was found in a one-inch line which connects with the pool’s main supply line and serves as part of the pools chemical treatment system.

Rogers said city crew member Chris Clark discovered the leak. The maintenance crew noted the chemical treatment which was supposed to be added to the pool via the line was not getting any results.

The leak was caused by a deterioration of a sleeve fitting where the treatment line connects with the main line going into the pool.

The leak was repaired Monday and the pool’s water level Tuesday morning showed little evidence of an overnight loss of water.

Andy Burgard, who is in charge of the pool’s mechanical operations, said the repair will mean a big savings in water, chemical costs and staff time.

Repairing of the leak is not expected to end all the loss of water which the pool normally experiences at this time of year. Another suspected leak is believed to be in the lines to the children’s wading pool. The wading pool was shut down last year and will be closed again this year.

The city and McDonald Park volunteers last weekend also repaired a leak in the main supply line for the baseball park which runs beneath the golf course. The leak was apparently caused by a failure where pipe links were joined together.

Rogers also reported the city is again attempting to determine the source of a leak which has surfaced in the upper section of Fairview Street. The city is attempting to get a second opinion of the source of the leak after excavation last week at a suspected site failed to find the source of the leak.
