Colton/Uniontown Fair will rev up once more this Friday. Fair manager Debbie Niehenke said she and her volunteers were fighting the cold and wind during set up for the fair last weekend and hope the wind and rain will hold off the day of the event.

“The only thing new this year is everyone trying to show (animals) in wool gloves and hats,” she said with a laugh.

Temperatures Friday are expected to be in the 40s.

Students of all ages have been preening and training animals to show at the fair, which opens at 8 a.m. and closes around 5 p.m. Most of this year’s events are animal shows, with a concession stand offering home-made food.

Niehenke said large livestock will be shown from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Horses will be shown at 1 p.m.

The dog show, a growing event at the annual school fair, begins at 8:15 a.m. The large animal Round Robin begins at 4 p.m.

Niehenke said dog show entries and horse entries are up again this year.

One student is bringing his pet chicken and a pet rabbit.

“This is a new exhibitor,” she said.

The petting show will feature chicks, ducklings and kittens. It was originally thought an iguana would be entered, but the weather is looking too cold, Niehenke said.

The Colton 4H club, Colton/Uniontown FFA, Pullman FFA and Pullman 4H clubs typically participate in the fair.

Most of the sheep and half of the beef shown at the Colton Uniontown Fair will be shown at the Spokane Junior Livestock Show a week later, Niehenke said.

The local chapter of Catholic Daughters will sell home-made sandwiches, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls.
