Envirothon set for Klemgard

The annual high school envirothon will be at Klemgard Park. Hosted by the Palouse Conservation district, Whitman County students will compete in five categories of natural resources.

The envirothon is a nation-wide event hosted by conservation districts to help teach students about the environment.

For example, in the wildlife category, students could be asked to identify the hides of local animals. For the aquatic ecology, the Union Flat Creek could be used for test questions.

Information coordinator for the district, Jennifer Boie, said students will have 20 minutes at each station set up at Klemgard Park.

“We are encouraging all of the local schools as well as home schooled students to put teams together,” Boie said.

More than 100 students from Whitman County schools came to the regional event last year.

This year’s envirothon will be April 26. The deadline for registration for teams is April 8 and registration is free. Students must be in grades nine through 12 and can be in teams from public or private schools. Teams can be three to five students in any combination of grade level.

Staff from the Whitman Conservation District, Pine Creek District, Palouse Rock Lake Conservation District and staff from the Natural Resources Conservation Service will help with the event.

Winners of the regional competition will go on to compete in the state meet, May 18-19 in Stanwood.
