Coffee shop in Tekoa opens

The sparkly sign of Tekoa’s newest coffee shop says it all; come here to get jazzed on caffeine.

Inside, couches covered with Zebra patterns, a shiny metal counter and bright hanging bulbs light up the shiny interior for willing coffee connoisseurs.

“I wanted it to be retro and a little bit funky. It just kind of came together,” said Melinda Wilkins.

The name derives from the combined names of Melinda and Rob Wilkins’ daughters.

Located along Tekoa’s Crosby Street, the business opened Nov. 9. It offers traditional caffeine fixings such as mochas and cappuccinos. Also on the menu is ice cream from WSU’s dairy, eclairs and other pastries.

The couple bought the business space for Café Éclair in March. The business was formerly a bookstore and espresso stand.

The front of the cafe has several seats and couches for patrons with a hallway leading to a room in the back that will be available for meetings and parties.

For example, the local dance group is using the room while their own dance studio across the street undergoes repairs.

Rob and Melinda have lived in Tekoa for many years. Melinda formerly served on the Tekoa city council, and she worked at Tekoa Medical Clinic for 17 years before retiring.

Wilkins said she has a long-term interest in supporting the town. Opening a business could help keep it growing.

“We’re big Tekoa supporters. We know in order for the town to grow, we have to invest in it,” she said.

Three other dining establishments in Tekoa are The Feeding Station, C and D’s Tavern and Café Artisan.

Hours for the new store are 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
