Palouse Empire Fair awards after beef carcass evaluation

This year 67 beef carcasses were evaluated in the 2010 Palouse Empire Fair Beef Carcass of Merit and Premier Steer contests. Winners were announced at the awards program Oct. 20, 2010 at the Palouse Empire Fairground.

First Place in the McIntosh-Reeves Carcass of Merit contest was Caleb Hannas of Hooper. Caleb’s name was engraved on the Joe Palumbo Memorial Traveling Trophy along with all the names of past winners.

Second place in the Beef Carcass of Merit contest went to Lucy Lautenschlager of Endicott. Lane Glorfield of St. John placed third.

Cash awards sponsored by McIntosh Angus and Bar R Cattle Company were presented to the top three places in the Carcass of Merit contest. Sixteen additional steers exhibited by AnnaLee Sears, Courtney Kimberling, Taylor Weekes, Jake Aune, Lane Hannas, Matt Stubbs, Phil Niehenke, Luke Moore, Roxanne Allenbach, Chris Wargo, Katy Lautenschlager, Wyatt Weller, Ashtyn Aune, Jason Wigen, Cassidi Shindler and Nick Niehenke qualified for the Carcass of Merit distinction.

Champion in the Premier Steer Contest was AnnaLee Sears of Pullman. She received the Mark Oldenburg Memorial traveling trophy for her achievement. Receiving reserve champion was Riley Schell of Farmington and third place winner was Chris Wargo of LaCrosse.

Pacific Northwest Farmers Cooperative and Colfax Grange Supply provided cash awards to the top three placings in the Premier Steer contest.

Twenty-four additional steers qualified for the Premier Steer distinction. They were exhibited by Courtney Kimberling, Caleb Hannas, Alex Kackman, Taylor Weekes, Hunter Weitze, Caleb Rich, Alex Whitman, Lucy Lautenschlager, Phil Niehenke, Lane Hannas, Cassidi Shindler, Luke Moore, Caleb Berquist, Nick Niehenke, Jake Aune, Lane Moore, Roxanne Allenbach, Austin Summers, Maggee Cochran, Mackenzie Kimberling, Matt Stubbs, CeJae Miller, Wyatt Weller and Jason Wigen,

In addition to evaluating desirable carcass characteristics, the premier steer contest also looks at average daily gain throughout the feeding period.
