Serving Whitman County since 1877
Another year brings another sobering list of needs for Colfax’s F.I.S.H. food pantry.
While the pantry is being supplied at a steady pace, it is still in need of basic supplies, according to F.I.S.H. food director Hannah Walker.
“We’re treading water and we’re staying even. We can stay even for the rest of the year,” Walker said. F.I.S.H. stands for Friends in Service of Humanity.
The group supplies the Colfax Community Action Center pantry.
For the second year, staffers at the county treasurer’s office are conducting a food drive for the pantry.
They are asking for donations of non-perishable food items from taxpayers who bring second half tax payments to the office.
Also raising supplies for the pantry this year will be the Scouting for Food Drive.
A Tom’s turkey drive has been scheduled again at Rosauers.
Walker said canned vegetables, fruit, tuna f.i.s.h., noodles, peanut butter, jam, cereal, spaghetti sauce and noodles, chili, mayo, many types of canned soup, crackers and any other staple are welcome.
To receive food from the pantry, patrons can visit the Community Action Center in downtown Colfax. A family of four can receive a full load of food for up to five days. That includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Walker said she is interested in getting the word out about needed donations because November and December tend to be seasons of giving and highest need.
“It is our harvest time,” she said.
