Uniontown sausage dinner set for St. Boniface Church

Sizable portions of Uniontown’s famed sausage will be served up Sunday, Oct. 17, at St. Boniface Catholic Church Oktoberfest sausage dinner to raise funds for church maintenance and operation.

“The recipe for the sausage has been handed from one generation to the next. They don’t like to deviate from the recipe,” said Rita Moneymaker, one of the organizers of the event and a member of the church Altar Society.

The annual German sausage dinner is a direct recipe from the town’s German-American population.

“Their heritage is important to them,” said Father Ed Marier, who serves as priest for the Catholic churches in Uniontown and Colton.

Their sausage dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Uniontown Community Building. Cole slaw, applesauce, mashed potatoes, rolls and a German dessert will also be on the menu. Admission for the dinner is $10 for ages 12 and over and $5 for children under 12.

The beer garden will also open at 11 a.m. and will operate until 5 p.m.

The Uniontown sausage feed every March uses the same recipe used in this sausage, Moneymaker said.

The festival’s Sweet Shoppe will offer home-made candies, cookies and some produce. The “Country Store” will offer toys and more fresh produce.

Father Marier said the historic stained glass windows and statues often lure in out-of-town visitors to the 105-year-old church.

“The stained glass windows are just unbelievable in themselves,” he said.

Out-of-area families occasionally have weddings in the church.

Proceeds from past Oktoberfest drives have produced funds for the upkeep of the church, winter heating costs and remodeling projects.

Last year the steeples and roof of the building were restored; this year they are working on restoration of the original masonry.

“We certainly stay within the footprint of the building itself. We have not ever remodeled it,” Moneymaker said.
