Colfax students fund electronic reader board

A new electrical reader board for the Colfax School District has been erected in front of Colfax High School. The new reader board is a student-funded, student-voted project.

It will replace an aging, manual reader board which is located in the 500 block of N. Main Street.

The Associated Student Body has been working for three years to get such a project completed, according to Cathy Landers, ASB advisor.

This past school year, students voted to purchase the reader board.

A committee of students spent part of last year researching different reader board companies to determine which would be best for Colfax. They selected Daktronics, a national LED display company.

The board comes with a program which is installed on Landers’ classroom computer. She programs messages to flash across the screen on set operating hours for the board.

Landers said she’ll try to have a balance of messages for athletics and non-athletic events.

The reader board cost the ASB roughly $15,000, but the final cost has not yet been totaled. The general account of the student ASB fund holds $21,700 at the moment.

ASB funds derive from the $40 annual fee every student can (and usually does) pay for an ASB card. Also adding to the fund is a cut of the proceeds from the school soda machines, including cuts in purchasing credits from the supplier through a special ongoing program.

Past ASB purchases include the sound systems in the school auditorium and gym. Another was the benches around the school.

The ASB board is made up of approximately 30 students, one representative from each school sport or club. Five ASB offices are filled each year by election. Colfax ASB president this year is Tuffy Hickman.
