Warren Miller clears the bar at state 2B meet.

St. John/Endicott grad Warren Miller moved through two qualification rounds to earn a slot in the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics at Sacramento last week. He wound up finishing 12th in the nation.

Miller started the summer campaign after placing second in the 2B track finals at Cheney to wrap up his career in Eagle Athletics. Miller cleared 6-6 in the state meet to finish an inch behind Reardan’s Grant Schulz in the 2B match.

The Eagles moved into the state 2B bracket this year after combining with LaCrosse/Washtucna for track.

USA Track & Field events are open to all members who register and pay dues.

Miller qualified in the first round with a 6-6 at the Inland Northwest meet which was a Mead High School in Spokane June 19. The 6-6, which matched his best competition mark in high school, advanced him to the Junior Olympics regional meet which was July 11 at Chief Stealth High in West Seattle.

Miller was off form in Seattle and topped out at 6-2.75, However, that was good enough for third place, and that qualified him for the national finals at Sacramento.

Junior Olympic events are actually logged in meters. The leap at Seattle a was 1.9 meters.

Qualifiers out of 15 regional events around the country can move on to the national event. Miller competed last Friday with more than 30 jumpers from around the country.

He finished at 1.95 meters, or 6-4.75 for 12th. The winner of the event was Jonathan Fuller at 2.1 meters, or 6-10.75.

Miller, who was salutatorian of this year’ class at St. John/Endicott, will start his college studies at Eastern Washington University this fall. He plans to major in computer engineering and hopes to check out prospects for competing on the Eagles track team.
