Ronald McDonald to bring book time

“Book Time with Ronald McDonald” will be at Eells Park in Colfax, Thursday, July 15, at 1 p.m. Everyone is invited to this family program sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library and McDonalds in Pullman.

This program uses a creative mix of music and magic to reinforce the value of books and the enjoyment of reading. Ronald McDonald has been performing educational assemblies in elementary schools and libraries. This show introduces new “book time‚” the time set aside each day to read. Ronald with his friend “Stoogie‚” the bookworm also reinforces appropriate library use and proper care of books.

Benewah picnic to mark 34th year

The 34th annual Benewah Valley Oldtimers’ picnic will be Sunday, July 11, beginning at 11 a.m. at the former Benewah Schoolhouse on the Benewah Road which intersects with Highway 95 east of Tekoa.

Participants are asked to bring a potluck dish. Ice cream and soda will be sold at the pop shop. The raffle prize this year will be a custom built greenhouse.

The picnic will again feature a parade, historical displays, exhibits, raffles and a benefit auction.

Hog Heaven at barn

Hog Heaven Big Band will play popular swing tunes from the 1920s to the 1940s at the Dahmen Barn July 24 from 7:30 to 9:30. This 16 piece group has been playing regularly on the Palouse for decades and has been at the Dahmen Barn since its grand opening in October of 2006. Folks come to dance or to listen and watch the accomplished dancers. Cost is $8 for a couple, $5 for a single and children under 12 are free.

Palouse scouts plan 30-year troop reunion

To celebrate 100 years of scouting in America Troop 455 of Palouse will have a 30 year reunion. All past Troop 455 scouts are invited to attend a scout gathering Saturday, July 10, in Palouse. Contact Jay Iverson or John Bofenkamp at Palouse for more information.

Reynolds daughter born

A girl, Mya Ashlynn Nicole, was born June 22, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Eliza Ortiz and Shane Reynolds. Maternal grandparents are Tirso and Rita Salazar, Spokane. Paternal grandparents are Patty and Dennis Reynolds. Weighing eight pounds, three ounces at birth, the baby joins siblings Jayden and Ethan.

The children, family and friends of Vicki Hatley’s Daycare were honored as top library supporters for the month of July. This year they raised more than $500 and over the past five years have contributed more than $1,000 for children’s programs and materials. Each week, Whitman County Library visits Vicki’s Daycare along and others, to provide outreach storytime programs for area youngsters.

In Colfax, “Pirates in the Park” is the theme for the Thursday, July 8 program at 1 p.m. in Eells Park. If the weather turns foul, please meet in the basement of the Colfax library. Call the Whitman County Library toll free 1-877-733-3375 if for details.

The St. John library was filled with 50 future scientists on Wednesday. The study of the properties of water was lead by a guest from the Palouse Science Discovery Center. Summer Reading in St. John continues through July 21.

Teens and adults can also participate by reading and reviewing three books this summer. Prizes for completion include coffee drinks, pizza slices or other treats from local Summer Reading sponsors.

Whitman County Library extends special thanks to the Friends of Whitman County Library, Danielle Klaveano, Jane Fluegel and Crossroads Nursery for providing and planting the landscaping outside the Colfax Library.
