Mid-point parking lot set for Chipman trail

The Bill Chipman trail will soon have a mid-trail “trail head” for users. A lighted parking lot will be constructed along the trail, just off the Sunshine Road overpass along the Moscow/Pullman highway.

The lot will have 14 to 21 parking spaces, depending on how much funding is available.

While this current work on the lot does not include a restroom, the department has plans to leave in space for future space for a facility.

The project will be put out to bid early to mid-summer, according to Park Ranger Justus Barton.

The trail runs eight miles between Moscow and Pullman and is a favorite among pedestrians, cyclists, bicyclists, and runners.

“A lot of people like the middle of the trail; it’s out away from buildings; it’s a lot more scenic,” said Tim Myers, parks department director.

More than three years ago, the county struck a deal with the owner of the site on Sunshine Road and bought the 1.3 acres at a discount price of $10,000.

A grant from the Department of Transportation for $76,000 will launch their project to completion, said Myers.

Myers said since receiving the grant about three years ago they have been going through federal and state guidelines associated with building next to the overpass.
