Hospital Highlights - One blood donation can save up to 3 lives!

During the holidays and winter months the number of people donating blood products is generally lower than usual. More people are traveling and find it hard to squeeze in the time to give blood. In addition, there are traditionally more accidents on the winter roadways.

Whitman Hospital will host a blood drive next Thursday, Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome or you can schedule an appointment by calling the hospital.

This is your chance to make a difference in the community. If you have never given blood before, now is your chance to see how simple it can be. Help save the lives of your friends, family, and neighbors. To be eligible to donate blood you must:

* Be at least 16 years old (16 & 17 year old donors need a completed INBC Permission and Consent Form signed by a parent or guardian).

* Weigh at least 110 pounds.

* Be in general good health including free of any cold or flu symptoms.

* Wait 72 hours after any dental procedures, including basic cleanings.

* Not have donated blood anywhere in the last eight weeks.

* Have waited six weeks following pregnancy.

* Have waited one year from the date of any body tattoos or piercings.

Here are some tips for a positive blood donation experience:

* Add iron rich foods to your daily diet.

* Drink plenty of fluids in the hours prior to your donation.

* Eat a nutritious meal 2 -4 hours prior.

* Bring picture ID (Driver’s License, State Issued ID, Passport, Military ID, Employment ID card).

* Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above your elbow.

* Plan your day in advance – you should avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day.

* After donating, be sure to re-hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of water and/or juice.

From all of us at WHMC, our wish is for your good health, happiness and wonderful times with family and friends.

Happy Holidays!
