    With the generous support of the City of Tekoa and the Friends of the Library, Tekoa’s library now has four computer work stations and two wireless stations available to the public. Third Thursday Kids Craft Club at their December session made snow-globes and consumed cupcakes. Next session will be Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. Celesta St. John has made a generous donation of books that are popular with the youth of Whitman County.   • Year-end budget changes

    Colfax city council members Monday night approved year-end additions to the 2011 budget to cover unanticipated expenses during the year. City Treasurer Mark Clinton said purchases made by the police department, some of them required by the hiring of new officers, added costs to the police budget. He added some of the costs reverted to the city after a federal grant program ceased. Among the expenses were $1,654 for bullet proof vests and $1,119 for handguns. For a Colfax man, he knows just where it comes from and how it is grown. Mike Reuter grew up on a holly farm on Vashon Island in Puget Sound.   • Burglary suspect arrested

    Douglas K. Fisher, 58, was arrested Dec. 20 by Colfax police after an investigation of reports of burglary of condominium units at Hill-Ray Plaza in Colfax. Officer Bryce Nebe said Fisher had been living at Hill-Ray. He was booked into jail on three probable charges of residential burglary and one probable charge of illegal possession of a firearm. According to the investigation report filed with the court, Fisher was discovered in one of the units by the daughter of the owner who had come to visit her father who is now living at Whitman... Full story

    4 was the year of earthquakes. There were real temblors, of course, but also economic and political quakes. The aftershocks are not over. As for the real ones, a 7.4 quake struck Chile on January 2. In March, a devastating 9.0 quake slammed Japan which caused a tsunami that overwhelmed the country’s northwest coast.     Colton senior quarterback Josh Straughan was named Washington 1B Player of the Year in the Seattle Times all-state selections. For his senior season, Straughan scored 60 touchdowns.     St. John/Endicott wrestlers logged three stops before the holiday break. The Eagles home meet, which was set for Friday, was called off because of a lack of entrants.     Colfax boys and girls basketball teams will depart for Yakima early today, Thursday, to play in the SunDome Shootout.     The Colfax school board Tuesday night approved a resolution to place a two-year levy proposal before district voters on the Feb. 14 ballot. The district will ask voters to approve a $1.2 million maintenance and operations levy for 2013 and another $1.25 million for 2014.     A one-percent increase in property tax revenue was part of the budget approved Tuesday morning by Whitman County commissioners.
