  • Transportation board grants $2 million for town roads

    Gazette Reporters Colton will get a new road, and St. John and Oakesdale will greatly improve streets as grants from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board were announced last week. Whitman County entities were awarded a total of $2,027,767 in transportation grants from the board for projects that will be done next year. Most major project was in Colton, where the city was awarded $680,000 to build a new street to divert heavy traffic from driving in front of the Colton school.   • Shawnee Rock gets $1,500 DOE fine

    Pullman-based Shawnee Rock was issued a $1,500 fine from the Washington Department of Ecology. Spokesperson Jani Gilbert said the company was operating without a water storage tank for dust suppression while mining at the Hayfield Quarry in Pullman. Ecology posted its list of third quarter 2011 penalties last week. The penalty was issued Aug. 31. According to the department’s news release, the penalty may be reduced through an appeal with the Pollution Control Hearings Board.... Full story

  • Warriors end SE bid, face Neah Bay

    Almira-Coulee-Hartline, the NE power team which has been charging through the eight-man playoffs, ended the SE state bid Saturday when they stopped Pomeroy, 46-6. The game was stopped with nine minutes left in the third quarter after the Warriors posted a 40-point gap. Pomeroy was the last SE contender in the playoffs after Touchet and Colton also earned berths in the eight-man grid. The Pirates finished 10-2.     State auditors gave Whitman County a clean grade on its 2010 financial statement. County officials were briefed Tuesday morning by state auditors Karen Wilson and Kent Zirker on the results of their review of the county’s 2009 financial statement. “I might start crying,” said Auditor Eunice Coker. Last year marked the first time in six years the county had submitted a full financial statement.   • Tolan trial set for Jan. 17

    A Jan. 17 trial was set for Anthony S. Tolan, Colfax, after he pleaded not guilty Nov. 18 in Whitman County Superior court. Tolan has been charged with attempted first degree trafficking in stolen property. The charge involves the Oct. 12 break-in of Colfax Body Shop on Main Street in Colfax. Tolan is formally charged with attempting to sell some of the tools which were reported missing from the shop.     Led by senior Quarterback Zach Bartlow, Waitsburg/Presccott scored early and often Saturday at the 2B semi-final game in Pasco to win the battle of the east side undefeated and get a ticket to the state title game in Tacoma Saturday.   • Colfax Firemen's Toy Box fund faces need

    Colfax Volunteer Firemen’s annual Toy Box fund raising drive is now underway. Colfax Volunteers have operated the toy drive for 30 years and over those years have been able to provide toys to many kids throughout Whitman County. Annually between 200 and 300 kids are provided toys to make their Christmas more enjoyable. Due to the economy, this year’s need for increased donations is even more important.   • Rock crushing accidents prompt road closure

    Following a pair of serious workplace accidents this fall at rock quarries, Whitman county commissioners last week decided to limit access to a crushing operation north of Palouse. James Hussey, 38, Peck, Idaho, was killed Sept. 13 after being electrocuted while working on a rock crushing crew for DeAtley Crushing Service of Clarkston at the Doneen pit east of Oakesdale.     St. John Jolly old elf to hit six towns. Santa Claus and various support crew members have booked a whirlwind tour of Whitman County this weekend, with stops set in Endicott, Garfield, LaCrosse, Pullman, Rosalia and St. John. Santa’s weekend tour follows an extended stop in Colfax today.
