    Lights go up along Main Street Christmas lights and snowflake decorations went up along Main Street in Colfax Tuesday. Chris Clark from Colfax Public Works worked in the city’s bucket truck to plug in the new LED lights strings. Jim Gills assisted on the project as the wrap man.     The Port of Whitman at its Nov. 22 session approved its 2017 operating budget. The budget remained the same as when it opened for public comment in early November. “We passed it with no changes,” said Port Properties and Development Manager Debbie Snell. The budget totals $4,037,000 with $1,094,500 slated in operating expenses and $1,546,000 in estimated capital expenses The capital expenses include potential projects at the Pullman Industrial Park and Henley Court, Boyer Park and possible fiber line installations.   • Oakesdale's Young wins VFW contest

    Oakesdale High School students took the top three places in the 2016 Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 Spokane Valley “Voice of Democracy” regional essay contest. Senior Danielle Young took first place followed by senior Lindsey Lindgren, second, and Julie Baljo, third, a freshman. The theme of this year's contest was, “My Responsibility as an American.” The essays were written as an assignment in English class and later recorded as the students read their entries aloud.     Colfax football coach and band director Mike Morgan will travel to Chicago Dec. 12 to attend the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Morgan will be one of more than 80 clinicians from all over the world who will deliver presentations.     Colfax girls basketball team will launch the new season Friday with an extra-tough assignment, a matchup with coach Clark Vining's Colton Wildcats, the eight-straight 1B champions.     Haunted Palouse proceeds for 2016 totaled $56,950, which was distributed to seven Palouse organizations. Palouse Community Center received $19,932, 4H Sciborgs robotics team got $9,097, Gar/Pal FFA $7,118, Garfield/Palouse Athletic Club $7,118, Palouse Chamber of Commerce $5,695, Tony Kettel Skate Gardens $5,139 and Roy M. Chatters Printing Museum $2,847. In 15 years of the event, which takes place annually over two weekends in October, $521,643 has been raised for various community organizations....

    The next Colfax Connects luncheon has been scheduled for Dec. 7 at the Colfax Golf Course. The luncheon is organized by the Colfax Chamber of Commerce and brings together individuals and businesses to discuss happenings and ideas for Colfax.     The Pullman-Moscow Runway Realignment project made significant progress this summer and fall, airport Administrator Tony Bean told the Gazette Friday, Nov. 18.   • Election results certified; four levy proposals fail

    Whitman County election results were certified Tuesday afternoon following the final ballot tabulation. Ballots cast in the county totaled 18,328 for an 84.74 percent voter turnout. With the certification, the results became final, and four town and district levies were still below the passing 60 percent approval threshold with the finalization.     The City of Pullman announced the hiring of Adam Lincoln as Pullman’s new city supervisor. Lincoln comes to Pullman from Lakewood where he served as assistant city manager. Lincoln graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in science, and he then went on to earn his masters in public administration from the University of Washington. He was confirmed as the city supervisor at the Nov. 15 Pullman City Council meeting.     The first of January is quickly approaching, and the Colfax Downtown Association wants to make sure businesses here are able to get a share of tax credit incentives available through the statewide Main Street program. Colfax was designated as a Main Street community one year ago. “We have all of our stuff prepared now,” said Colfax Unified Executive Director Valoree Gregory.     Colfax The Colfax Winterfest festivities are slated for today with vendors, the Festival of Trees, Santa Clause and a lighted parade. There will be pop-up shops in several locations, including in The Center, the DeHart building at 213 N. Main St. and the Masonic Temple.     Football fans slowed to a stop-and-go mode along Main Street in Colfax Friday morning as they made their way to WSU’s Martin Stadium for the big Apple Cup game.
