    Snow blanketed the ground over most of the county Monday and Tuesday mornings. Monday morning, the east end of the county saw a couple of inches of snow, while Colfax and western parts of the county got just enough to cover the ground. It was virtually all melted by noon. But early Tuesday morning, big snow flakes floated down to ground level, leaving about an inch in Colfax.     The SE running duel between the St. John Eagles and the Asotin Panthers continued Saturday amid a horde of runners in the three-district regional qualifier at Planter’s Ferry in the Spokane Valley. Asotin took the team win with 74 points, but the Eagles finished second in the all B race with a 78.     Playing at home vs. St. John-Endicott, the Colton Wildcats led 16-14 in the first quarter before a barrage of five consecutive touchdowns began what would become a final score of 84-40. Senior quarterback Jake Straughan went 10 for 14 for 248 yards and four touchdowns, while receiver Dalton Patchen caught five passes for 166 yards.     Colfax volleyball players defeated Northwest Christian and Davenport Saturday at St. George’s to win the district tournament and the top slot for this week's regional round at Chiawana High School in Pasco. The Bulldogs defeated Davenport 25-15, 25-19 and 25-8 in the title match. They defeated Northwest Christian 25-6, 25-10 and 25-16 in the semifinal round.     Gar-Pal and Lacrosse-Washtucna met in Palouse Monday night to decide who would earn a trip to Clarkston for the District 9 1B volleyball tournament. For the loser, their season would end.     The independent Rosalia Spartans look to the playoffs this week after finishing their regular season with a 38-22 win over King’s Lake Christian. After the team beat Sunnyside Christian 50-22 last Friday, the Vikings control their destiny as the playoff picture forms.     Leo and Terri Haas will be the new concessionaires for Boyer Park and Marina. Although Port of Whitman County officials have not made an official announcement, the Haas’ liquor license request was approved at Monday’s county commissioner meeting.   • Farmington looks at fuel usage, installing meters

    After a matter of gas consumption was brought up by Farmington Mayor Ron Dugan at the Oct. 21 council meeting, the council voted to have meters installed on both city fuel pumps and have employees fill out a usage log. At the meeting, the mayor noted that a total of 180 gallons were used in 2012, while 333 gallons have been used so far this year.     Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Colfax Saturday distributed Scouting for Food flyers to residents. The scouts will begin the distribution at about 11 a.m. The door flyers are a new part of the annual Scouting for Food Drive this year and residents are asked to put their food donations in grocery bags.     County Coroner Peter Martin Monday announced plans to retire from his practice at the Tekoa Medical Clinic. Martin, who said he will continue to serve as county coroner, plans to turn the clinic over to the Whitman Medical Group which will begin serving patients in the Tekoa area after the first of the year. His retirement date will be Dec. 31. Certified as a physician’s assistant, Martin has practiced at the Tekoa Clinic for the past 23 years.     County Administrative Director Gary Petrovich reported to county commissioners Monday the forecast for current year spending now totals $12.9 million, about $100,000 less than the original projection. That puts the projected budget deficit at $1,279,000 at the end of this year. Annual property tax and sales tax revenue was budgeted at a little more than $7 million, compared to $7,556,027 in 2012 and $6,266,465 in 2011.
