  • Bulletin column - Oct. 29 2009

    Oct 29, 2009

These reports are from the previous four issues of the Daily Bulletin in Colfax. They are reprinted here for the benefit of Gazette readers who reside outside of Colfax. Some accounts have been updated. Fairview park gets drain Parks Superintendent Steve Larkin has installed a surface drain for runoff at the small park along Fairview Street on the south hill of Colfax. The drain was needed because water from springs at the small park has been moving across the grassed area and spilling onto Fairview on the grade going up the hospital hill. The... Full story

  • BRUCE CAMERON - Oct. 29, 2009

    Oct 29, 2009

Ready, Set, Go. And Go. And Go. W. BRUCE CAMERON When it comes to my gastro-intestinal system, my firm policy is that all traffic should be strictly one-way. I’m therefore more than a little nonplussed when my doctor advises me she’d like to see me get a colonoscopy. “What kind of person,” I demand, “would like to see something like that?” For those of you fortunate enough not to know what a colonoscopy is, picture yourself sitting at home having a quiet evening with your family, and the doorbell rings, and it’s the Roto-Rooter man. Only in...

  • Letters - Oct. 29, 2009

Different approach This is in response to the letter in the Oct. 15 paper titled “Recognizing that no-till works.” As I share the author’s passion for direct seed and the many benefits realized by adopting these systems, I also believe that there are better ways to promote direct seed. When you use terminology like “almost immoral” all that is accomplished is discrediting any facts that were presented earlier in the article, alienating the very audience you want to reach, and simply hurting the cause. My suggestion would be to promote t...

High Tech Poised to Lead Washington’s Recovery As federal lawmakers scramble to create jobs in the face of record unemployment, Washington may have a hometown advantage: our high tech sector, specifically information technology or IT. That includes computers, software design and development, as well as the myriad manufacturing and service industries that support the IT sector. According to a global study released earlier this month by the International Data Corporation, the IT sector is outperforming the rest of the global economy and could p... Full story

Balloon boy hoax just the latest of many tales SO the Balloon Boy was a hoax. We were all taken for a ride instead of a 6-year old kid who blew the whistle on his folks because he didn’t know any better and came up with the truth instead of a lie. Actually, I wasn’t one of those glued to the television set. I was doing something else and only caught up with the story shortly before the balloon came down. I must admit that my first thought was where’s Charlton Heston when you need him? Remember one of those airport movies where a helic... Full story

  • Opinion - Oct. 29, 2009

    Oct 29, 2009

New WIAA football classification does what it was to undo For a revision which was supposed to allow high school athletes around the state an equal chance at playoff glory, the state’s high school football league assignments appear to have missed the mark. At least, that seems to be the result for smaller teams in this part of the state. Instead, the classification changes have ended the playoff opportunities for players on at least four teams in the SE and NE districts. Two years ago the state’s Washington Interscholastic Activities Ass...

  • Colfax picks up six tons of wet leaves

    Oct 29, 2009

Colfax crews collected 10 loads of leaf bags Monday after many Colfax residents spent part of the weekend raking their yards. Each load weighed approximately 1,300 pounds so the total collection was more than six tons. Rain early Monday added to the weight of the bags. Andy Rogers, public works director, asked residents to consider the weight factor when raking up wet leaves. He noted crew members have to lift the bags onto the truck. The bags are hauled to a composting area in back of the Colfax sewer treatment plan. They are mixed with dirt...

  • My Two Cents: Moscow stricken by Halowe’en zombie invasion

    Joe Smillie|Oct 29, 2009

For decades, we have walked oblivious through the streets of our eastern neighbor Moscow. We Whitman County residents have enjoyed Moscow for its classic movie theaters, shopping mall, book stores and luscious gyros. It is only now, in the light of day following the tragic events of Oct. 25, that we realize our folly was not one of arrogance and need, but of ignorance and neglect. Just before twilight Sunday, Viola Slim, caretaker of the Moscow cemetery, said he heard unearthly creaks and groans while making his nightly rounds. “I definitely h...

Both title contenders have a lot of talent and speed which works well in the eight-man grid. Neither has a lot of size.
