    Weeds, weeds, weeds As I drive north to Rosalia or south to Colfax, I see many different weeds growing along the edge of Highway 195. I would think the DOT would at least make an attempt to control some of the weeds, such as cat tails, vetch and Canadian thistle. However, I see no control. Good chemicals are easy to obtain. All that would be needed is some labor and some eyes to see the problem. Farmers around Cashup control weeds very well. They spend many dollars and many hours of labor to control any weeds. I would think the DOT could learn...

    For photos, see the weekly pages for Aug. 11 Pullman Barracudas swim team rolled up 215 points Sunday to win the Tri-County all-league meet at Colfax. The Pullman win ended a nine-year run of championships posted by the Pomeroy team in the final event of the summer's novice league swim competition.     Members of the Washington State Parks commission July 21 unanimously accepted a policy to commit the state to a full-length 285-mile John Wayne Trail across the state that was submitted by members of the state parks staff. An account in the Bulletin column of the July 28 Gazette, and in an issue in the prior week's Bulletin, incorrectly reported the report was submitted to the park commission by the John Wayne Trail advisory committee which conducted a series of meetings in Moses Lake.     The Eiffel Tower, colorful parasols and delicious desserts will be found at the Palouse Community Center during a French-inspired fundraiser on Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. for the Tony Kettel Skate Gardens.     The Washington State Parks' Commission ended a chapter on the John Wayne Trail in late July with a recommendation for a section of it that cuts through Whitman County.     The Colfax and Community Fund has placed donation "ballot" jars at local businesses for the Kiss the Pig contest that will conclude at the Palouse Empire Fair this year. The jars are located at Les Schwab, Colfax City Hall, Tick Klock Drugstore and the Colfax branch of the Whitman County Library.   • Wawawai fire consumes 11,452 acres

    The Snake River Fire at Wawawai in Whitman and Garfield counties on the Snake River was pronounced 100 percent contained late Sunday with the total amount of acres burned cited at 11,452. The fire control was turned over to District 14 at Colton and District 1 in Garfield County Monday morning, but some of the crews in the state response team headed west to a new fire, the Fletcher Road Fire, which was sparked by lightning Sunday morning.
