    Levi Johnstone, 27, Moscow, was taken by Rosalia ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane Monday afternoon after his lower right leg was severed in an elevator accident at Ewan, according to a report by Deputy Sgt. Rick McNannay. Johnstone had been working at the Whitgro Grain, Inc., elevator in Ewan. McNannay said Johnstone and another employee were carrying a metal frame at about 3 p.m. when Johnstone stumbled. That caused him to step into a floor opening which housed an operating auger, and his right leg went into the mechanism....

  • Colfax ‘06 grad survives plane crash at Keller

    Justin T. Marchand, 22, Keller area rancher who was injured Tuesday morning, July 6, in a plane crash along Highway 21 three miles north of Keller. Marchand is a member of the 2006 class of Colfax High School where he was known as Justin Miller. According to a report in the Omak Chronicle, the crash took the life of the pilot, Elwyn J. Fletcher, 65, Mesa. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Marchand’s mother and step-father are Barb and Corey Miller of Colfax.     High-powered winds swept this giant cottonwood tree into the west end of Patricia Sessa’s home on the south hill in Colfax Monday night. Colfax fire crews responded at 6:22 p.m. to 404 E. Fairview. An Avista crew was called to the scene to disconnect electrical service. Winds swept across all of eastern Washington Monday, darkening skies with the dust of topsoil blown off fields.     Faced with a steep drop in revenue, Colfax school board Monday passed a budget for the coming school year that is $286,000 less than last year. The 2010-2011 budget also has a $237,840 deficit, which will be balanced out of the district’s reserves. Total charted for the 2009-2010 school year was $6,549,262. The total projected expenditures for next year are $6,263,835.     County Commissioner Michael Largent Monday expressed concern about the recent hiring of Esther Wilson to oversee the county’s computer systems. Information Technology Director Chris Nelson said last week she had hired Wilson to fill the newly created systems administrator position.
