    "Cool Fax Elite" won the 12 year old mixed bracket at Hoopfest. The team charged through the field to finish undefeated. Team members from the left are Caden Marker, Hayden Ewing, Mason Gilchrist and Ellie Nails. They were coached by Craig Gilchrist. Because Hoopfest rules require mixed teams to always have a mixed lineup in the action, Nails had to stay in action through the whole campaign, making the winning shot in two of the games.   • WDFW posts restrictions to reduce fire hazard

    Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife implemented restrictions on fires and other activities beginning June 30 on agency-managed lands in eastern Washington. Cynthia Wilkerson, manager of the WDFW Lands Division, said the department is taking steps to reduce the risk of fire in its wildlife areas and access areas. The department's emergency restrictions are on agency lands east of the Cascades. They prohibit campfires, including those in fire rings.     Nate Akesson safely slides in at second base. Pullman Posse wrapped up a campaign in the Spokane Wooden Bat tournament Monday with a 4-2 mark after losing 3-4 to the Yakima Valley Peppers.     First round of swim meets for the Tri-County Novice Swim League competition will be today with Pullman and Pomeroy teams slated at the Colfax pool at 4 p.m. A three-team opener scheduled at Palouse today has been cancelled. The Palouse team will host Pullman and St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse Tuesday at Garfield. The team based at Palouse again competes as GPOP which stands for Garfield/Palouse/Oakesdale and Plummer.     Whitman County Cougars played a doubleheader against Gonzaga Prep Friday in Pullman. They won the first game 9-8 with Noah Beach of Rosalia tagging a walk off bunt. The Cougars won the second game 13-3. Tyler Horner, Brady Lees, Carson Kolter and Noah Beach had singles. Mitch Lavielle and Brayden Wells each hit doubles.     Jim Fitzgerald and Nancy Rothwell displayed their Whitehall rowboat at the Perkins House Ice Cream Social. Fitzgerald made the boat in the shop where he makes guitars. Among displays at the Perkins House Ice Cream Social June 25 was a rowing boat which was built a year ago by Jim Fitzgerald of Colfax.     Rural Fire District 11’s new truck was in action Saturday when crews responded to the brush fire on McNeilly Road. The new truck was built on a Freightliner L150 chassis and replaces a 1979 International, according to Fire District Chief Craig Corbeill. It will be stationed in Colfax.     A tentative plan is set for Sept. 6 for the next meeting between representatives from the county, the City of Pullman and Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport on the question of how to align land-use rules for the expanding facility.     Whitman County Fire District 6 at Endicott was awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant June 23 for $111,905. The FEMA funds will be used to buy new turnout suits, breathing masks and tanks for the department. The grant specifies the money must be spent on fire-fighting equipment. Keith Luft, District 6 chief, said the department’s current equipment is “all way out-dated.” The fire district applied for the grant in January.
