  • Last load to Arlington ends 19-year landfill mode

    Empire Disposal trucks hauled their last load of Whitman County trash to the Waste Management landfill in Arlington, Ore., Friday as the county’s new waste disposal contract kicked in July 1. County commissioners in March signed a contract with Regional Disposal Company to dispose of the county’s garbage. The new contract drops cost to the county from $68 a ton under the current contract to $53 a ton.   • Wheat crop production points to high prices

    Washington wheat growers are expected to harvest less wheat this year according to new estimates from the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Based on a survey last month, the agency believes winter wheat will be down three percent from last year’s crop, while spring wheat acreage will be down nearly 25 percent.   • Rotary honors Kirkpatrick

    Colfax Rotary Club presented a Paul Harris award to Al Kirkpatrick during a “changing of the guard” meeting June 28. This is the third time Kirkpatrick has received the Paul Harris award which involves a $1,000 donation from the club to the Rotary International Foundation. Kirkpatrick and John Kehne this year split a term as Colfax club president and Kirkpatrick was also recognized for his part in raising $2,400 for Rotary’s efforts against polio.     Rick McNannay reported for duty as the new Colfax Police Chief Monday. A 17-year veteran in law enforcement, McNannay had served with the Whitman County Sheriff’s office since 1999 and attained the rank of sergeant. He trained under the sheriff’s reserve program and then served with the Moscow Police Department from 1995 until joining the sheriff’s office.     The first of 58 towers for First Wind’s $170 million Palouse Wind power farm is slated to be erected Friday, as tower parts come in from Colorado. Ben Fairbanks, western region business development manager for First Wind, said three turbines were sitting in Pasco at press time waiting for superload permits from the state Department of Transportation to make the trip to the Naff Ridge wind farm.   • Palouse council set to adjust street seating policy with tavern

    After a discussion at the June 26 Palouse city council meeting, the agreement between the city and Palouse Tavern regarding outdoor seating is set to be adjusted. As it stands, the open-ended 2005 Agreement For Use of Public Street allows for outdoor seating on Friday nights. However, the Beach Street space has been used for more than just those times.     A suit for alleged damages was filed Monday in Whitman County superior court by Ralph Walter, Colfax fire chief who was terminated in July of 2010 and then un-terminated after the start of a city civil service hearing three months later. The 17-page complaint was filed against the city, City Administrator Carl Thompson and former Mayor Norma Becker. The suit also lists 10 “John or Jane Doe,” defendants who could be determined to be involved at a later date.     The voices of more than 200 people filled the hayloft of David and Becky Buri’s barn Sunday night outside Colfax as they gathered for an old-time gospel sing-a-long and pie social. “We wanted to facilitate a place where people could come together and worship in an old-fashioned, nostalgic kind of way,” said Becky Buri.
