    State highway crews jumped a gun on the dedication of the renamed Senator Eugene Prince Road by posting new signs Monday, a month ahead of a planned dedication. “They got the sign up?” asked a surprised Whitman County Commissioner Greg Partch upon hearing the news. “We had a big unveiling in the works, but I guess it’s a little anticlimactic now.” The road was named after the late Sen.     The schedules of a number of attorneys stand in front of a decision on the amended development contract between Whitman County and Boise-based Hawkins Companies. County commissioners had slated Monday afternoon to decide on the company’s proposed amendment to the $15 million development deal signed in January.   • Palouse pool slates lessons

    Palouse swim pool opened last Wednesday. The pool will operate Monday through Friday. Swim lessons will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon followed by open swim from 1 to 4:30. The pool will close at 4:30 and re-open for lap swim/water aerobics from 5 to 6 p.m. Family swim runs from 6 to 7 followed by open swim from 7 to 8 p.m. Open swim Saturday and Sunday will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Group swim lessons cost $25 for residents inside the city limits and $35 for those who live outside.   • Feds again reject port's railroad rehab request

    The Port of Whitman County again was denied federal funding to upgrade bridges on the state-owned railroad which runs down the east side of Whitman County. The port had asked the feds for $8.5 million to repair 25 bridges on 29 miles of the P&L rail line, part of the 300-mile state-owned Palouse River and Coulee City Rail system. The port is part of the four-county PCC Rail Authority which oversees the line.     Sterling Bank will open its newest branch Monday, July 2, in LaCrosse. Sterling will occupy the 1915-vintage First Savings Bank building on Main Street. The building was vacated and LaCrosse left without a bank when state and federal regulators closed the Bank of Whitman last August. Sterling will lease the building from LaCrosse Community Pride, a volunteer non-profit formed in 2010 with the goal of bringing back a grocery store to the town.     Dignitaries broke ground on the $17 million McCoy Grain Terminal in an official ceremony in the Rosalia City Park last Wednesday, June 20.
