    Palouse Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 2010-2011 Palouse Royalty program. Patti Green-Kent, royalty coordinator, said candidates must be entering their junior year in high school in the fall of 2010 and live in the Palouse school district. If not enough juniors show an interest, the program will be opened up to sophomores with all candidates judged on merit.   • County budget marks gains against deficit projections

    The deficit in Whitman County’s operating budget will likely increase by more than $10,000 next week, when commissioners consider the year’s second budget amendment. Commissioners said they will likely pass the amendment next Monday after a public hearing which netted no comment. The proposed amendment and the monthly financial report were presented Monday by Esther Wilson and Debbie Kilpatrick, remaining employees in the depleted finance department.     Pullman Patriots dropped a pair of league games Tuesday prior to going into another weekend of Palouse Summer Series action. The Spokane Blue Devils took both games Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton field, 9-3 in the opener and 6-4 in the closer. The two losses left the Patriots at 4-6 in league play after a split last Wednesday left them at 4-4 in the Spokane AAA Legion standings.     Saturday’s ideal weather and large entry of sprint boats from around the northwest brought in a crowd which set a new attendance mark for Webbs’ Slough at St. John. Amanda Webb said the race crowd Saturday topped 4,000 for the first time in the four years the race site has been in operation in a converted pasture west of the golf course.     This year’s state tournament for Babe Ruth baseball teams will be July 21-26 at Pullman High School’s Quann Field. The tourney will bring in seven of the best teams from around the state for the five-day run. Pullman Youth Baseball Association will serve as the tourney managers, according to James Bledsoe, Pullman’s Babe Ruth League Director.     Whitman Cougars played for the first time under the new McDonald Field lights Tuesday with the second game of a double header stretching to the 10 p.m. mark. The visiting Cheney team took both sides of the double to drop the Cougs’ league record to 3-3.     Night baseball officially came to McDonald Field last Thursday when the field lights went on for the first time. The first Colfax night game featured two Seattle elite teams who are in town for a Palouse Summer Series weekend. The game was booked to start at 7:45 p.m. Over the next two weeks night games will be played at McDonald for two more sessions of the Summer Series.     A record crowd took to the terraces at Webbs' Slough at St. John Saturday to watch the USSBA-sanctioned sprint boat races. Race entrants from around the northwest and British Columbia churned up the waters of the tight slough course. Two of the three classes turned out tight competition and extra fast times. The crowd at the slough was estimated at more than 4,000. The boats will be back at the slough Aug. 28. Perry, long-time resident of Palouse, was among World War II vets from Spokane who departed June 11 for an honor flight to Washington, D.C. to see the new World War II Memorial. “We were treated like royalty,” Perry said.     A 30-year-old log foot bridge on the trail at Klemgard Park is being replaced by county park crew members and volunteers. The bridge tilted over during the winter. It crosses a creek about a half mile up the trail. Klemgard park is a 69-acre county park on Union Flat Creek.     Washington State University announced yesterday the hiring of Gerrit Hoogenboom, a professor of agrometeorology and crop modeling, as the new director of the school’s agricultural weather network, AgWeatherNet. Ralph Cavatieri, director of the WSU ag research center, said Hoogenboom will take the helm Aug. 1.     An accident just north of LaCrosse on the Winona Road took the lives of two people early Sunday morning. A report Sunday from the sheriff’s office identified the victims as Yvonne M. Weed, 27, former LaCrosse resident from the Spokane area, and the driver of the car, Christopher A. Glowen, 38, Spokane Valley.     Paving for the second Almota Road rebuild segment is expected to start next week. Crews will surface more than three miles of unpaved road June 28, 29, and 30 in a move to finish the road project before the start of harvest.     The county next week will finalize the purchase on an acre of land outside Lamont, a site that houses a crucial radio tower in the county’s emergency communication network. “In open session, the commissioners will sign the deed for a radio site,” said Steve Krigbaum, communications system manager for the county.     Five Colfax City council members Thursday went on record as calling for a special council meeting to discuss personnel policy.     Another turn of events for the Palouse Brownfields project last week moved the site that much closer to completion. Crews finished testing the oil, diesel and gas pollutants saturating the ground of Palouse’s Brownfields site last week. The site, an ongoing environmental clean-up and re-use project for the city, was also awarded $48,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency last week.
