  • Rose garden account set up at Palouse bank

    An account has been set up at AmericanWest Bank for donations for the continued maintenance of the five memorial rose gardens in Palouse. The money will go to pay for items such as fertilizer, mulch, pesticide and occasional replacement roses and dedication plaques. Previously, the money for maintenance and continued care came from fees which people paid for roses and memorial plaques. “But we’ve been doing this for a long time, and we’re not adding any new garden,” said Mary Estes, one of the volunteers who tends the roses each Monday morning...

    After two months of pre-installation work, Avista will begin putting up L.E.D. lights in 106 utility-owned streetlights in Palouse as part of a pilot program. The work is expected to last for six to eight weeks. Last year, Palouse was chosen as one of six communities to take part in the Transportation Improvement Board (T.I.B.) program, including Benton City, Blaine, Buckley, Coulee Dam, Palouse and Ridgefield.     Colfax softball season ended early Saturday when they sustained a one-run loss to Morton-White Pass in the consolation bracket of the state B tournament at Gateway Park in Yakima.     McKenna Davis of Colfax, who has campaigned this year as an eighth grader, finished fourth in the state B golf finals at Lakewood May 30. Davis finished with a 94 in the second round May 29 to finish with a two-day total of 195. Emily Baumgart of DeSales finished with an amazing 42 strokes ahead of the field to take first.     Most high school graduations will be celebrated throughout Whitman County this weekend, with the exceptions being Pullman, which marked commencement Sunday, and Rosalia which will have commencement June 14. The total number of graduates in the county will be 305, a drop of 17 from last year’s total. Pullman’s graduate count dropped by 16 this year, and the tally at Colfax dropped by 14.     It ended with a full bore charge at the end of two days of a championship run. The Colfax girls already had the state 2B track on the board, but in the last event Saturday they added frosting.     Deputy Prosecutor Merritt Decker Monday filed charges of harassment with a threat to kill and possession of a dangerous weapon on school facilities against the 15-year-old boy who was arrested the morning of May 30 at Colfax High School.
