  • Colfax rolls to final four for first time since 2010

    Colfax baseball team Saturday advanced to the state final four after defeating Okanogan and Asotin Saturday in the state round of 16. The state ticket was the first landed by the Bulldogs since the 2010 finals when they finished in second place after a championship loss to Seattle Lutheran. Colfax is booked to play Toledo in the first round Friday night at the state final which will be at Wheeler Field in Centralia. DeSales and Adna are matched up in the other side of the final four.     It will be another late May trip to the "Palm Springs of Washington" for the Colton Wildcats at the state 1B softball tournament in Yakima. Colton enters the weekend as the No. 1-overall seed in the eight-team bracket, which begins play Friday. At the District 7/9 Regional Tournament last week at Medical Lake, Colton beat Cusick 10-5 and Liberty Christian 12-2.     St. John/Endicott boys stacked up 68 points to finish fourth among 11 teams in the 1B regional at Central Valley Friday. Adam Blakeley took a win in the 400, and Jimmy Hollingshead placed second in both sprints. The SJE girls placed sixth with 33 points.     Colfax girls rolled up 112 points to top 16 other teams in the SE-NE regional at Central Valley Friday. The Bulldogs edged the LRS Broncos by 16 points. Colfax boys placed fifth with 49 points behind the 94 point win tagged by Waitsburg/Prescott. Tekao/Rosalia boys, led by two sprint wins booked by Eli Richardson, placed four points back of the Bulldog boys.     Registration is underway for summer enrichment classes at the Colfax Library. Classes include iPad Refresher, Cookies and Cakes with Whole Grain Flours, Color Theory and Practice, Painting with Watercolors and Mosaic Sculpture. The non-credit classes begin in June.     Every Tuesday, seven women gather in the basement of Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax to make quilts. "Peace Lutheran has been doing this project for about 40 years," said Alice Barlass, a member of the church. The quilting project is part of Lutheran World Relief, an international organization aiming to end poverty, injustice and human suffering. Internationally, the goal of the organization is to produce 500,000 quilts per year to send to those in need, both in the U.S. and abroad.     The Oakesdale Outdoor Market will begin its second summer June 19, the first of four dates including Old Mill Days. The event began last year when Nanette Bolyard, who had sold cupcakes at the Saturday Market in Tekoa, thought that Oakesdale might benefit from something similar.   • Re-opening celebration set for Lyons Ferry State Park

    Lyons Ferry State Park will host a grand re-opening celebration June 5 to mark the return of the state park after 13 years. The celebration will be 155 years to the day after Lyons Ferry was first operated. The ferry ceased operation in 1968. The park closed in 2002 amid budget constraints that could not keep the park in operation, though it has been operated by the Port of Columbia since then as the Lyons Ferry Park and Lyons Ferry Marina.     Three weeks ago, Mary Dye was planning her daughter’s upcoming high school graduation party. Now, the newly appointed ninth district representative said she is way behind on that and is trying to get up to speed on everything for her new position. Dye, a Pomeroy resident, was appointed to the seat left vacant by the resignation of Susan Fagan of Pullman.     Rather be shot than go to prison: Tuesday morning at approximately 2 a.m. Sgt. Chris Chapman from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle off the road near the intersection of Shawnee Road and Highway 195. Sgt.
