    These reports are from the previous four issues of the Daily Bulletin in Colfax. They are reprinted here for the benefit of Gazette readers who reside outside of Colfax. Some accounts have been updated. HIGH SPEED CHASE ENDS AT ROSALIA A $75,000 bail was set in superior court Friday morning for pre-trail release of Dakota D. Scharff, 20, Spokane, who was arrested Thursday afternoon following a high speed chase on Highway 271 and county roads.     A two-run double in the bottom of the last inning Tuesday by Ella Gregory bagged a playoff slot for the Tekoa/Rosalia softball team in the NE playoff grid. The hit pulled out an 8-7 win over Wilbur/Creston. The two teams were booked in the last-chance playoff after posting matching 3-15 records in the league run. Tommia Pakootas allowed six hits in taking the playoff win. Next stop for the Timberwolves will be a game against Lind/Ritzville/Sprague.... Full story

    Colfax girls placed second to Okanogan Saturday in the Undeberg Invitational track meet at Ritzville which drew entrants from 29 schools. Okanogan tallied 140 points, and the Bulldogs finished with 87.5. Colfax boys placed ninth with 25.5 points, behind the 124 point win stacked by the Okanogan team. Scout Cai again rolled up wins in both sprint events, the high jump and the pole vault, and Olivia Mellor won the long jump at 15-7. Mellor placed second in the triple jump.     Two big softball wins Saturday at Davenport landed the Colfax girls in second place in the league with a 15-3 record. The Bulldogs and Northwest Christian, which finished undefeated, earned a bye in the league’s first playoff round. The 15-3 Colfax finish bumped a 14-4 finish by Kettle Falls which landed in third place. Colfax rolled to Davenport Saturday morning needing just one win to tie Kettle in the standings.   • Colton, Pomeroy to tiebreaker

    A one-hit shutout from sophomore Cameron Bean led Colton to a 12-0 win at DeSales Tuesday. The non-league game was a prelude to a Southeast 1B tiebreaker between Pomeroy and Colton to decide the league title. The top two seeds for the playoffs will be settled Friday at Clarkston High School starting at 5 p.m. Bean struck out eight DeSales batters with no walks.     Colfax golfers continued their string of team wins over the week with a win Tuesday in an NE district match at Stoneridge in Blanchard, a par 72 course. Top scores for the Bulldogs were Chance Weitze 76, Bennett Gray 80, AJ Miller and Brian DeYoung, each 91, and Gunnar Aune 109. League foe Palmer Gaulke of Davenport bumped Weitze for the medalist honors at the meet. Gray placed third overall.     WSU women's varsity eight (top boat) took a 4.7 second win over Oregon State University as part of a sweep over the Beavers in the lone home meet Saturday morning at Wawawai. Varsity eight race times over the 2,000-meter course were 6:23.17 for the Cougars and 6:27.87. The varsity eight battle was one of six races for the day with WSU booking a sweep.     Colfax baseball players finished off another NE league sweep Saturday with two five-inning shutouts at Davenport to wrap a 20-0 run. The Bulldogs followed up Tuesday with an 8-2 win over Wilbur/ Creston in the first round of a short NE-SE playoff series. Next round will be a collision with the Asotin Panthers, the top SE league finishers who shut out Northwest Christian 10-0 in the other playoff test Tuesday at Asotin.     Colton has won the Southeast 1B softball league with a 6-0 record, 12-4 overall, after sweeping Pomeroy last Saturday. On Monday, the Wildcats played at Genesee for a 10-0 non-league loss in six innings. “The errors we made didn't help,” said Colton coach Brad Nilson. “My pitcher threw well but we didn't back her up.     Only in Your State, a social media website which aims to help people find new and exciting things in their states, recently released a list titled “15 of the Coolest Small Towns in Washington You've Probably Never Heard Of.” Colfax earned the 11th ranking on the website’s list.     A hearing is set for May 16 for public input on four zone-change proposals at 11 a.m. in the commissioners' room at the county courthouse.     The Wine and Micro Beer auction at Hill-Ray Plaza April 29 had 190 people in attendance. The event raised $16,500 for the Colfax Chamber of Commerce.   • County okays petition for Wilma rail crossing

    Whitman County commissioners Monday approved the signing of a petition which could lead to a new rail crossing at Wilma Drive at the Port of Wilma. The rail spur is to serve a new fertilizer plant being built by CHS at the Port of Wilma. The petition is by CHS to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, the agency which will decide whether to approve the crossing.     A search is underway by the Colfax School District for a new junior high/high school principal after the resignation of Nathan Whittle. He will complete his contract June 30, marking one year in the position. “It’s not my wife’s hometown. Nothing against Colfax, it’s just not where she wanted to be.     Whitman County .09 grant funds were awarded to two county projects April 19. A $66,000 grant went to the city of Colfax/Colfax School District for the Schmuck Park/Colfax Schools’ athletic complex restrooms project.
