    Apr 26, 2012

In a ruling filed in superior court, Judge David Frazier granted a motion to suppress evidence involving the arrest Jan. 13 of Frank R. Toupal at a Spokane hotel room. The judge ruled officers should have obtained a warrant before asking a cell phone provider to use GPS technology to locate Toupal in Spokane where he went after allegedly threatening his estranged wife at a residence in Steptoe. The judge ruled as the investigation developed that night officers had a three-hour time span in which they could have requested a search warrant. That...

  • An Illegal Quantum Leap

    Apr 26, 2012

    W. Bruce Cameron Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2007. I’ve always maintained that research is the refuge of writers too lazy to make up their own facts. But when someone else sends me his research, I’m more than happy to accept it — as with this item, which comes straight out of court documents. On March 22, 2007, a woman named Tammy Roberson filed a complaint in U.S. district court against George Bush, Condoleezza Rice and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), charging the defenda...

  • Don Brunell: Killing King Coal

    Apr 26, 2012

Recently, the EPA proposed new air quality regulations for power plants that activists say will finally kill King Coal. The rule would require all new power plants to cut emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by almost 44 percent. While natural gas plants can meet the standard, coal-fired plants cannot without expensive carbon-capture and storage technology that is not commercially available. While EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson stresses the standards will apply only to new power plants, some experts say the Clean Air Act explicitly requires the go...

Rosen apologized to her and “anyone else who was offended.” COMMENT—USA Today says Hillary Rosen has two children with her ex-partner Elizabeth Birch, although there is no explanation for how that came about. ITEM—Congre...

    Apr 26, 2012

Mitt Romney says he likes to fire people. If elected, can the General Services Administration be his first target? A few (but not enough) heads have already rolled at the agency that threw itself an infamous Las Vegas conference that could have been planned by former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski before he went to jail. The GSA couldn’t outdo Kozlowski, who threw his wife a birthday party on an Italian island with an ice sculpture of Michelangelo’s “David” that urinated vodka and billed his company for half the cost, but it undertook its confere...
