Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2008. When it comes to flying, I believe in pampering myself, always picking the best of America’s bankrupt airlines. Recently, I flew across the country and couldn’t decide between first class and business class, since I couldn’t afford either one of them. I wound up sitting in coach, so named because you need someone to shout, “Come on, you can do it!” as you try to wedge yourself into your seat. Many airlines have started adding surcharges to their ticket prices to help defray...

There’s an ancient Chinese proverb that says, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” In other words, it is better to teach someone to take care of themselves than keep them dependent on others. In our country today, the growing tendency is to let government provide for us. Almost lost is the notion that, if people are willing to take risks, work hard and pick themselves up when they fall, they will eventually succeed. As government grows ever larger in an attempt to provi...

  • Rich Lowry

Before he triumphed over prejudice, Jackie Robinson triumphed over himself. The signal achievements of the pioneering baseball star, whose story is recounted in the top-grossing biopic “42,” were perseverance and self-control. In the face of hatred from fans and opposing players, he showed no anger. In response to isolation from his teammates, he betrayed no self-pity. He went out every day and swung the bat and ran the bases and fielded his position, and displayed the character that his detractors lacked. “42” is a paean to discipline and to a...

  • Good old days

    Apr 24, 2013

8 years ago April 27, 1888 It is a common complaint that the farm life is not appreciated by our people. We long for the elegant pursuits, or the ways and fashions of the town. But the farmer has the most safe and natural occupation, and ought to find life sweeter, if less highly seasoned, than any other. He alone, strictly speaking, has a home. How can a man take root and thrive without land? He writes his history on his fields. How many ties, how many resources he has; his friendship with his cattle, his team, his dog, trees; the satisfacti...
