  • Colfax First Thursday books big names

    Plans for music for the Colfax First Thursday series include relocation of the stage to accommodate performers for the upcoming series. First Thursday this year received a $10,000 grant from the City of Colfax tourism fund, and that has been used to notch up the level of performance groups for the monthly series.   • Sagging siding

    A railroad siding at Palouse slumps over an eroded bank of the North Fork of the Palouse River across from Hayton Greene Park. The river has slowly cut away the bank to leave the siding unfit for duty. Logs and debris from recent flooding which covered the park are hung up along this siding’s shore.... Full story

  • Morning fire damages Rancho Viejo in Pullman

    A fire broke out in the kitchen area of the Rancho Viejo Restaurant in Pullman Friday morning and caused enough damage to close the restaurant. Firefighters were dispatched to the restaurant at 170 S. Grand Avenue, shortly after 8:30 a.m. when a passerby called 9-1-1 after he was alerted by a restaurant employee that there was a fire in the kitchen.     Colfax will soon have a new business. Donna Holberg plans to open a new shop at 213 N. Main Street inside the building owned by Kimberly DeHart. The building also houses Terry Vietz’s barbershop and DeHart’s shredding business.     After a successful pilot program, the LaCrosse senior meal is set to become permanent.   • County server upgrade for IT department

    The Board of County Commissioners Monday approved a request from the county’s information technology department for the purchase of a new Barracuda Backup Server. The county is currently operating with a Barracuda Backup Server 890 that has been in service for three years. “We no longer have the capacity to take care of the 17.5 terabytes of county data,” Chris Nelson, IT director, told the commissioners.     One candidate will appear at the Port of Whitman County commission meeting today, April 20, to interview for the open commissioner position. The seat became vacant with the passing of longtime commissioner Dan Boone on March 2.     Turning the soil at the Palouse Plowing Bee last weekend was strenuous work for the pair of drafts of Geoff Pritchard of Deary, Idaho. Pritchard’s team was joined by several others from around the region to plow, plant and fertilize the field near the Palouse Empire Fairground. The plowing bee took place Saturday and Sunday.
