    Hunters and anglers are reminded to purchase their 2017-18 hunting and fishing licenses for the new license year that began April 1. Although many lakes are open year-round, the fourth Saturday in April marks the traditional start of the lowland lakes fishing season for trout and warm water fish. Check the regulations.     Asotin Panthers hammered the Tekoa/Rosalia Timberwolves in a doubleheader on the Panthers turf Friday. The hosts took the first game 22-4 and the second game 25-11. The wins advanced the Panthers' record to 4-5 on the season, and they are 4-4 in league play. The Timberwolves for the season have picked up players from Garfield/Palouse which did not field a softball team because of a lack of players.     Playing at Touchet March 31, the Garfield/Palouse baseball team won 5-2 and 2-0 to take the doubleheader. In the second game, the Vikings' Blake Jones used 84 pitches, with five strikeouts while Touchet pitcher Ben Ortiz struck out 12 Gar/Pal batters. The Vikings got on the board in the fourth inning on a groundout and fly-out from Mason Bates and Riley Pedersen. In the opener, Evan Weagraff pitched for Gar/Pal, striking out 11 batters.     Colfax girls Friday rolled up a total of 94 points to top 18 other teams in the invitational meet at Deer Park. The Bulldogs posted a 10-point win margin over second-place Liberty which finished with 84 points. Colfax boys placed fifth with 51.8 points behind the 74.5 win posted by Northwest Christian.     The defending state champion Colton High School baseball team is off to a 5-1 start, including non-league wins Tuesday in Moses Lake over Royal and Cascade of Leavenworth.     Colfax opened the NE league campaign with two wins over Liberty Friday in games which were moved to WSU's Bailey-Brayton Field. The Bulldogs took the opener 9-1 and then took the second game 12-5 with a nine-run charge in the bottom of the sixth inning. The wins leave Colfax at 3-1 on the season with a tough test Saturday when they are slated to play at Asotin for the first league baseball test between the two foes.     The 2017 Colfax High School softball season gets underway with a doubleheader win March 31 at McDonald Park. Colfax softball players Friday defeated Liberty twice in a launch of the rain-delayed league campaign.   • Several attend hearing to allow chickens in Endicott

    A public meeting Tuesday, March 28, in the multipurpose room at the Endicott school brought out several residents and varying opinions on the issue of allowing chickens within town limits.   • Spokane Valley firm lands contract for Rosalia Whitman Avenue project

    Rosalia's Whitman Avenue reconstruction project is set to get underway this summer. Last week, the town awarded a contract to Sandry Construction Company out of Spokane Valley to complete the project. This will be the first time the town has worked with Sandry, but the project engineers, J-U-B Engineers, have worked with the company.     This month, Washington Federal bank will be marking its 100th anniversary. The bank was first established in 1917 in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood by two brothers, W. C. Kean and Frank C. Kean. The bank was founded as Ballard Savings & Loan. According to a written history of the bank, the Kean brothers wanted to better the community by offering steady, practical loans to help their neighbors achieve the dream of owning their own homes.   • Tekoa building owner misses cleanup deadlines

    The first of a series of deadlines given to the owner of a collapsed building in Tekoa has passed while the city monitors the situation on the clean-up and stabilization work. The roof of the former Cohn Motor Company – at the corner of Crosby and Main Street – collapsed in January under snow.     The new vintage Route 26 Market is set to make its debut in Colfax this weekend at the Jennings Elementary School gym.     The RV park at the Palouse Empire Fairground will have a new addition this summer: restrooms. The Board of County Commissioners Monday approved a $22,000 expenditure from the county’s lodging tax proceeds at the recommendation of the lodging tax advisory committee.
