    One of the players on the BYU team in the NCAA tournament, Logan Magnusson, is a grandson of the late Gene Biedel, Endicott native who finished his high school career at Colfax. Biedel played on CHS football and basketball teams before departing for service in World War II. BYU and Gonzaga, first round winners at Denver, faced off Saturday, in the round of 32, and BYU eliminated the Zags 89-67.     Colfax High grad Hal (Babe Lyons) who has been playing golf for 76 years, reports this year’s annual edition of the Cougar Desert Golf Classic received recognition from the Mayor Richard Kite of the city of Rancho Mirage, California, who declared a Cougar Booster Weekend in conjunction with the tournament and luncheon.   • Tekoa water system to see busy spring

    Four major water projects will get underway for the city of Tekoa this spring and summer. Projects include a new city well, a new roof for the town’s water reservoir, a new water line dug from the reservoir into town and a city-wide replacement of most main water lines. Tekoa Public Works Director Duane Groom said the city has been experiencing water line failures on its aging water-line system. “Most of the water system was put in in the 40s,” said Groom. Rosalia High School junior Josie Daniels Monday earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the top honor in Girl Scouts, by staging a tragedy.   • Worker’s error dumps fluid into Snake

    Nearly 100 gallons of hydraulic fluid was spilled into the Snake River March 13 after an operator overfilled a bearing in one of the turbines at Lower Granite Dam. Washington state’s Department of Ecology said last Friday the spill created an oily sheen on the river that could be seen for about a mile downstream from the dam. The spill was reported by a park ranger working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who noticed it while patrolling the area.     Twenty-five Colton students traveled to Spokane Community College March 12 to compete in the 2011 Regional Science Olympiad Tournament. This year Colton entered two B teams, seventh to ninth grade. The first team placed third in a field of 13 teams to qualify for a trip to the state competition.     The sixth annual penny drive at Whitman County Library will be March 28-April 16 in honor of National Library Week. Each of the 14 library branches will collect money to fund programs or projects. National Library Week is a statewide observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country.     A large marble memorial for veterans will be constructed in the Goldenrod Cemetery at Tekoa. The groundskeeper for the cemetery, who is helping with the memorial, estimates there are more than 300 area veterans buried in the cemetery. More than 100 years of Tekoa area soldiers are buried in the town’s Goldenrod Cemetery.
