    Eastern Washington public meetings on setting salmon fishing seasons will be March 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Walla Walla Community College's main lecture hall in Clarkston and March 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Benton Public Utility District (PUD) building, 2721 W. 10th Ave., in Kennewick.     The Garfield-Palouse softball team picked up a win over Troy last week as the season got underway. Troy put together 12 runs on three hits but a two-RBI double from the Vikings’ Lindsey Lindgren in the final inning decided the game. The young Vikings’ pitchers hit or walked 15 batters. In the fifth inning, Troy’s Jolee Carr hit a grand slam to put her team up 12-6. The Garfield-Palouse team responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and added three more in the sixth.     Starting his sixth year as Head Coach for Colfax softball, Terry Eng has seven seniors on the roster and expects make a strong run this year.   • State grant will provide truck for county recycling

    Whitman County Public Works Director Mark Storey told county commissioners Monday morning that the department is eligible for an additional $180,000 state Coordinated Prevention Grant through the Department of Ecology. These grants usually pay for recycling activities. With the additional money, Storey said the department will purchase a new rolloff truck to exchange containers at recycle sites in small towns around the county.   • County gets notice on pot extraction plan

    Whitman County commissioners received a notification of an application for a marijuana extraction operation now before the state Liquor Control Board. The notice states Interstate 502, now located on the Airport Road at Pullman, plans to undertake extractions of marijuana requiring the use of a professional grade closed loop extraction system. The company indicated in their operating plan that they intend to extract marijuana using a hydrocarbon process.     County commissioners Monday discussed the Government Finance Officers Association’s report during their Monday morning workshop. In its final report, GFOA representatives recommended the county develop a project team that would identify roles and responsibilities that are not clear at this time.   • Support beam appears under sagging sidewalk

    Installation of a support beam began Tuesday as repair work advanced on the Highway 26 bridge at Colfax. The beam was placed on special support brackets which were attached to the main structure of the bridge last week. The sidewalk on the downstream side of the bridge was sagging because its separate support structure was failing.     LaCrosse Community Pride’s committees reported on March 4 the community is moving forward with activities, according to member Lois Startin. Mayor Randy Camp reported that the city project for the new water/sewer plant went out to bid this week. According to LaCrosse City Clerk Angela Broeckel, the city water project is being paid for with a drinking water state revolving fund that is half loan and half grant.     Whitman County commissioners Monday morning appointed two new Albion City Council members. The action was required at the county level because Albion was unable to fill the two seats, which have been vacant since Sept. 23 of last year, within 90 days.
