    The steel building on the Palouse Brownsfield site is out for bids. The Palouse city council voted unanimously Jan. 10 to declare the 28-by-40 foot building on the Brownsfield property as surplus. This made it eligible for proposals from interested parties to salvage it. Thus, the city will get a chance to make money while having the 1950s building taken down at no cost to them.   • DOE seeks local comments on Colfax fuel site report

    Colfax residents today have received a printed report from the state Department of Ecology on the petroleum contamination site on north Main Street. The site has already been the location of prior containment projects including removal of former petroleum tanks. The DOE report advises residents that the comment period on the Remedial Investigation Report will be open until the end of the month. Copies of the report are available at the DOE office on N.     Two suits in the superior court battle over Kentucky Blue Grass production were amended Friday in Whitman County Superior Court. The amendments were filed with court orders which allowed the growers’ attorney to amend the suits to includes alleged violatons of the state’s Consumer Protecton Act. . The court allowed the growers to amend their suits after a Jan. 3 court hearing. Spokane Attorney Richard Kuhling, who represents the growers, filed the amendments Friday.     A change of season has come to the Colfax Chamber of Commerce. After 10 years as secretary, Judy Liddle retired in December and Kathy Clark took over.     The city of Tekoa has a new council member, business owner Richard Kelly. He was appointed by Mayor John Jaeger and the city council Monday night, replacing Mike Boganreif, who resigned in January. “I just wanted to try to be involved a little more around here,” Kelly said. His wife Lisa was just appointed secretary of the Tekoa Chamber of Commerce in January. Kelly owns the Tekoa Market and the Tekoa Hardware building.     More than 30 percent of voters have mailed in their ballots for the Valentine’s Day election count, Whitman County elections supervisor Debbie Hooper said Tuesday. Elections worker Cindy Pitts reported 5,119 of the 16,991 ballots mailed to voters had been returned, leaving 11,830 still out. Deadline for returning the ballots will be next Tuesday, Feb. 14.     Bid packages are going out for construction on Palouse Wind’s north county wind farm. Ben Fairbanks, western regional business development manager for Palouse Wind’s parent company First Wind, said the package for concrete work is currently out for bids, and contracts for civil and electrical work will open for bids in the near future.
