    Colfax High School FCCLA members delivered pop-tabs to the Spokane Ronald McDonald House Jan. 27. The club collected more than 122,000 tabs.     The United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack Friday announced a general sign-up this year for landowners who would like to enroll or re-enroll land in the Conservation Reserve Program. The sign-up begins March 14 and runs through April 14. General CRP accounts for enrollment of entire fields while continuous CRP is used for targeted areas of particular high risk of environmental impact – areas like hilltops and stream beds.     Whitman County commissioners Monday re-stocked seven of the county’s volunteer oversight boards by appointing new members or re-appointing sitting members. David “Pete” Hertz of Palouse was appointed to a four -year term on the planning commission. Hertz was appointed to the panel late last year to fill out the term of Archie Neal of Garfield.     With an eye on working more community input into the proposed remodeling of the Colton school, committee members gathered Wednesday to discuss that input. Colton/Uniontown citizens met twice last month and gave the school administration suggestions for the project which initially had an overall cost of $10.2 million.     Whitman County commissioners officially allocated $100,000 in .09 economic development funding for small town project proposals Monday. The county’s Blue Ribbon Advisory Task Committee will hear applications and decide which projects should receive funding in April. They had considered withholding the funds this year out of fear the legislature would hold the funds to try and balance the state’s mounting budget deficit.     Nearly one-fifth of the Palouse Empire Fair’s annual budget could fall casualty of Washington’s budget crisis. The loss of funding comes as part of the legislature’s efforts to close a $4.6 billion shortfall in the overall state budget.     Revolutionary protests in Egypt have Northwest wheat growers tuned in to North Africa. “We’re definitely keeping an eye over there,” said Tom Mick, CEO of the Washington Grain Alliance. “We have no game plan in place because we don’t know what’s going to happen, but whatever happens is going to have an impact on us.” Egypt is by far the world’s leading importer of wheat.     The town of Palouse is weeks away from hiring an engineer to develop the town’s comprehensive water system plan. The town is looking to put together an extensive water system plan that would map out city water structure, pinpoint future city water projects and detail past projects.
