    Palouse Divide Nordic Ski club will host a community ski day at the Palouse Divide Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will include a variety of Nordic skiing activities. Activities will include information tables with maps, trail information, park-n-ski passes and hot beverages. Free introductory cross-country ski lessons will be offered at 10:30 a.m. and noon.     Hog Heaven to return Hog Heaven Big Band will return to Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. to play tunes from the 1920s to the 1940s at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. The band plays at the Barn on the fourth Saturday of the month throughout 2011. The band plays until 9:30 and is enjoyed by those who come to listen or dance.     Mayor Norma Becker at the Jan. 3 council sessions said the city contracted with Harrison Electric for converting lights in city buildings because they presented the best plan for undertaking the project. Payment to Harrison of $22,067 was approved with other city bills at the Dec. 20 council session. Councilmen J.W. Roberts and David Nails voted against approving the bill at that session.   • Charges follow Colfax arrest

    Charges were filed Jan. 5 in superior court against Skyler C. Sullivan, 23, Clarkston, who was originally arrested Nov. 8 in Colfax. Assistant Chief David Szambelan stopped a truck Sullivan was driving after receiving a tip from drug investigators that he would be going through town.     Whitman County’s planning commission gave unanimous approval Jan. 5 to changes in county code that would give Planner Alan Thomson sole discretion to grant certain building permits. Under the changes, applicants looking to erect cell phone towers, build accessory farm buildings or change how their land is used would no longer have to seek permits from the county’s Board of Adjustment which is made up of residents appointed by the county commissioners.     Workers prepare to erect a 100-foot-tall wind turbine on Tony Kettel’s property off Highway 27. A 100-foot-tall wind turbine dedicated to the late Mike Carlton will soon be erected at the home of Tony Kettel south of Palouse. Carlton passed away suddenly in October and was a long-time advocate for sustainable energy on the Palouse. He was a beloved presence in the town of Palouse and this is one of two memorials in his name.
