Time is running out. And, it is running out fast. That is the crux of the new United Nations climate report. According to the report, dramatic changes in the output of carbon gases will need to be achieved by 2030. Unless enough is done to curtail climate warming by that time, the world will be faced with a crisis by 2040. Many of the consequences of a failure to achieve the goals will be dire. The report places the rising average temperatures as guideposts. In the past, it was considered disastrous if average global temperatures rose two...

  • Remarkable

Last week, Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona declared that more time and an FBI investigation were needed to decide on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. New allegations against Kavanaugh had clouded the hearings devoted to his nomination. Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee wanted a fuller investigation as well. The Republicans accused them of trying to delay the vote. The Republicans wanted the vote and the matter closed quickly. Neither party was willing to bend from their stance. Then, Flake, a Republican,...

  • Climate refugees

    Gordon Forgey, Publisher|Sep 27, 2018

Another natural disaster is predicted to impact the United States. As with the Dust Bowl, refugees will flood different parts of the country. The new disaster will be slower in coming and last longer than the Depression era dislocation of people. And, it has already started. The Guardian newspaper in England reports that Americans are already reacting to the new threat. The paper calls those trying to escape it “climate refugees.” Many more, it says, will follow in the coming years as the climate continues to warm. Climate refugees will grow in...

  • The Cougs head for L.A.

    Gordon Forgey, Publisher|Sep 20, 2018

The Cougars will have to be careful Friday night. They are playing the mighty Trojans in the L.A. Coliseum. The last time the two teams played WSU won. A fan was also injured by an USC player after the game. It can get rough on the field. It is not bound to be easier in Los Angeles. USC is mad. They are unsettled. Take for instance the fact that they have been beaten by Texas in two of their last three meetings. They are still steaming over the fact that one of their great stars was unjustly accused of murder. And to make matters worse, they...

  • Who is to do it?

Last week was tough on President Trump. Advance copies of Bob Woodward's new book were released. Then an anonymous letter was published in the New York Times criticizing Trump and declaring that some of his subordinates were actively trying to thwart his agenda. Woodward's book has been roundly attacked by some. Others declare that it is a truthful depiction. As for the anonymous letter, published as an op-ed in the Times, criticism is strong over some of the assertions and the fact the author is undeclared. A wild chase is on to name the...

    Gordon Forgey, Publisher|Sep 6, 2018

The Palouse Empire Fair begins its run today. This is a traditional event for the county. It is one of the few events that encompasses the entire county, and it has for decades. From all points of the county, youth bring their animals for judging and sale, crafters display their best work, bakers and canners vie for blue ribbons and all sorts of art and photography is hung for inspection and judging. The variety at the fair is wide and interesting. Also, booths are set up for politicians, political issues and commercial enterprises. And, there...

Long-serving Senator John McCain died Saturday. His death was anticipated. He had been suffering from brain cancer for months. A week of remembrances is underway. A memorial service is planned for Saturday with his burial on Sunday. Among others, both former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will give eulogies. Both defeated McCain in his bids for the presidency. This in itself says a lot about McCain. He was revered by many. He was respected by many more. Most importantly, he worked with politicians in both parties. He was also...

The Transportation and Safety Administration did not pass a series of tests involving airport security. That was bad enough. But, subsequently, it was disclosed that 73 TSA agents have suspected terrorism ties. That is 73 people ensconced in the very process that is designed to root out terrorists. That is 73 people hired to stop people just like them. Not only do these agents screen passengers and luggage, they are charged with screening airline and airport employees and airport vendors. Although the TSA employment checks have been classified...

  • Feeling safe?

    Gordon Forgey|Jun 3, 2015

The Transportation Safety Administration is going through a shakeup. Reportedly, the agency failed in detecting dangerous items passing through security at airports. The items were brought by TSA agents posing as passengers. They were to test the integrity of the security system. The screeners failed to detect the test items ninety-five percent of the time As a result, agency managers are being reassigned and a number of procedural changes are being made. This news comes at the same time that it was discovered that a government laboratory...

Death struck Highway 195 last week. Two young women were killed. Two others were injured. Nothing good can come out of such a tragedy, unless it reminds us to drive as if our lives and the lives of others depend upon it. Despite its neglect, there is still magic in the Codger Pole. Take another look at it. It deserves better....
